A NY Slice In Times Square

We get to our hotel on a Monday around 2pm right in Times Square (Marriott Marquis)... Thought itd be nice to drop our stuff and then walk outside and get a slice of NY style pizza. Would satisfy the kid and hubby for a fast and easy lunch, and satisfy the whats-so-great-about-NY-pizza conundrum.

Where right near our hotel would be a good place? -- Im thinking walk up to a window and get a slice and walk--kind of place---or is that just on TV?

There are plenty of great places in nyc where you can just grab a slice. Unfortunately, Times Square suffers from a major dirth of decent places to get a slice. In my opinion, the best slice in the Times Square area can be found at Bravo Pizza on 37th and Broadway.

OP here---Ok two clarifications---1- not THIS Monday! Sorry. We are going to be in NY (first time trip) Aug 20-24. So will hopefully not be 100 deg. 2--The walk out of the hotel and grab a slice is more like walk out of the hotel and start checking out NY--Times Square and over towards Rockefeller Ctr etc-- in other words, the first afternoon checking out the Midtown area.

Also, dinner for that night either Sushi Yasuda if were up for a big thing or walk to 9th St and check out one of the restaurants there. Going against my nature and trying to keep it open. We're not late eaters so it'll be earlier-- don't want to do the whole pizza route for lunch and fill up.

So-- any other slice options more Midtown-y I guess???

Check out Midtown Lunch website at
        http://midtownlunch.com/blog/restaura...
There is a list of pizza places including links and reviews. The home page features Jiammetos (sp?) Pizza truck with photos and personal review. Hope this helps. I too like to grab something to eat while walking around enjoying the sites -don't want to waste time sitting down....

the "get to our hotel on A Monday" should have clued me into that. thanks for clarifying.
i think the list below from fayth looks great. the sullivan st bakery makes great pizza and bread but it's very atypical pizza. i would suggest trying it once you've tried a regular at a pizzeria.

btw, try menupages.com, select the area of choice and then choose pizzerias. you'll get some helpful reviews and ratings, complete with address and phone number.

You could try Bella Napoli on W. 49th. It isn't a destination slice by any stretch, but it's the best I've found in the area (which, as others have noted, is not exactly ground zero for pizza). It's between Sixth and Seventh Aves., on the south side of the street -- more or less on your way from Times Square to Rock Center.

2nd for Bella Napoli - decent slice if you're passing by.

They don't do slices, but they're in Times Square, and they're wonderful: the uptown version of John's of Bleeker (same restaurant, I'm pretty sure) - sit down for a quick pizza - 44th between 7th and 8th.

            John's (Times Square)
260 West 44th Street, New York NY 10036
            212-391-7560

It's the same restaurant but I've never felt that the John's in Times Square is as good as the John's in the West Village. And there are definitely a number of places that are better than John's. So you can walk right in and get an NY-style pizza there but you won't be getting the best of the city.

To me, the "what's so great about NY pizza" is composed of two parts:
            1. That you can get a decent slice for $2 at any random neighborhood place, and by decent I mean better than most of the other places in the US. (You often see this on TV). And keep in mind that Times Square places will up the price to $2.50 or $2.75. Myself and other NYers dislike this as the price of a slice has traditionally been in line with a subway fare.
            2. That you can also get amazing thin-crust pizza that's been baked very quickly at several hundred degrees Fahrenheit, in an old-timey coal-fired oven. See:

Yup. John's uptown is a far cry from John's on Bleeker. I was also unaware that pizza is available by the slice at either location.

Ugghh! Times Square is such a bad nabe for good pizza because it's so touristy and will push places like Ray's (eeeeecck!). I hate to say it (this will kill the 'quick' idea) but, if you are up for it and it's not 100 degrees as they are predicting, try hopping onto the 2 train (go uptown) at 42nd street and take it one stop (if it's running express) to W72 and Broadway. Then walk north to 77th and Broadway to grab a slice at New Town Pizza. Alternatively, you can take the 1 to W79 (approximately 4 stops) and walk a block or two south to New Town Pizza.

This is one of my favorite pizza by the slice places in the city (at least the one closest to W42) and i've tried many places. It;s basically a joint but the pizza is great. I've had pizza in Italy (including Naples) and was raised in a family that made their own pizza at home.

Angelo's on W57 and 8th is vey good but, again, it isn't pizza by the slice.

But NY definitely has many places where you can walk up to a window and grab a slice as you've read. problem is some are so touristy and you'll just be missing out on real pizza.
I'd like to think the purpose of this site will help protect you guys from this especially since you were wise enough to ask.

There are countless places all the way downtown that nearly blow away New Town pizza.
Anyway, have a great time and please let us know what you wind up trying.

I don't believe either place does slices -- both are sit-down and whole pies. You can also do take-out. Sorry, I thought that was implicit in Miriam's post: "sit down for a quick pizza"

just saw that. thanks. ok. good. it's a shame that i can't think of one good grab a slice place in that nabe. maybe along 9th would be aviva1's best bet but that will also be a schlep in hot weather. actually, maybe sitting down in a cool place may be their best bet for that day given the temps. so i'd say angelo's or john's . either eat in or grab it back to a cool hotel lobby. let's see what others come up with.
