This post is for lexdevil and others who were wondering about the signature Hakka Cantonese offerings at Golden Mountain (Wa Yu San Zhong) in Hayward (on Foothill Blvd).

For the last 2 Fridays in a row, around 4:30 to 5 pm on AM1450, the Cantonese food talk show were airing the same segment of recommending the signature dishes at Golden Mountain, which is contrary to reports that they no longer do on the regular to-go menu (was it menupages dot com or something like that), despite the supposed ownership change which is also unconfirmed at this point. This really isn't a talk show but more so radio adverts paid for by the restaurants. Last time they did a half hour segment recommending Hamano Sushi in SF which is now run by Chinese (previously received numerous rave reviews, perhaps when it was under Japanese ownership?) and also 100% Healthy Desserts (despite the notoriously slow service in Millbrae). Certain callers might win restaurant coupons, depending on what the promotion is.

Again the signature offerings at Golden Mountain that were under debate whether they are still being offered are:

basil stir fried clams
Braised pork belly in clay pot with preseved veg
pan fried stuffed tofu
authentic salt BAKED "yellow fur"/"princess" (arguably range) chicken (not salt water steamed)

It is possible they won't have it on their regular menu but you can certainly ask for it (that was the last I remember reading). But it makes no sense for AM1450 to re-run those ads and demand is still there for these dishes.

I just hope it is as good as 2 to 3 years ago. I'm really missing that salt baked chicken...

Yes- it seems to still serve the Hakka specialties, though we went last night for the first time and probably will not be back. It may be an off night, but food and service were both poor. They had several large tables and otherwise the restaurant was full. Food came sporadically with long delays between dishes.

We ordered the salt baked chicken, basil clams, giner scallion crab and dried scallop egg white fried rice. We were then given conflicting information by two waitresses about whether they were out of the chicken or not - eventually it was confirmed that they did run out. We ordered the yellow chive noodles instead, which was quite possibly the saddest rendition of noodles I have ever had. The basil clams had a good flavor and the sauce was very nice, though by the time it was served it was but lukewarm. The crab was most dissapointing - the flavors really need a boost. At $19.99 it is much cheaper than the SF Vietnamese venues for crabs, but I'd pay double for PPQ's anyday. The fried rice was ok, but R&G Lounge has nothing to worry about.

Half way into our meal, there were a lot of people waiting just inside the door and they were not really greeted by the busy staff. A brawl broke out suddenly with a dozen people jostling around, and furniture was pushed all over, insults traded, scratches and punches galore. While this was a freak incident that likely will not be repeated on a subsequent visit, the bright floresent lighting and uneven bathroom-style tiling in the main dining room is decidedly worse than the typical ethnic dive, and will certainly still be there. Safe to say, we will not be back.

Talked to my uncle over the weekend who knew the (former) owners of Golden Mountain. The original owners sold the business. No idea where they are now or what they are doing.

Apparently prices have gone up and quality has dipped (by how much I don't know). They still offer the same Hakka Cantonese signature fare. I guess that explains why there were no more 10% coupons from the newspaper.
