SPAM sent to my unique CHOW address...

kapuku Jul 5, 2007 12:49 PM

I registered a unique email address when I signed up at chowhound (eg, chowhound@mywebsite.com). I'm now getting spam sent to that unique address. I've looked around the site and confirmed that the address isn't posted anywhere that I can find and I haven't used it in any postings or anywhere online. So, what gives? Is Chowhound leaking out email addresses or selling them?

    No, we're definitely not.

But spammers use dictionary style attacks--generating lists of possible emails for known domains and send spam to all of them. That's most likely where your spam is coming from.

I've got email addresses that have never, ever been used for anything, and they still get the occasional bit of spam.
