Birthday dinner in San Jose area
I'll be visiting San Jose next week and am in need of a great birthday dinner spot to surprise my boyfriend. We'll be in the Saratoga/Cupertino area, but are willing to drive further. I don't want anything stuffy or too fancy, a place where two twenty-somethings can relax and celebrate would be best. He loves ribs and seafood. No Mexican (we both went to school in San Diego and believe that good Mexican food should never cost more than $5).
Also, he's got a huge sweet tooth, and I wanted to get him a decent cake. We used to love this dessert restaurant in San Diego called Extraordinary Desserts. www.extraordinarydesserts.com. Is there anything like this in the Bay Area? If not, any restaurant that serves great desserts or a bakery would be fantastic.

La Fondue in Saratoga is a lot of fun. Their cheese fondues and the stuff you dip into them are excellent. You could also forego the cake and go for the yummy chocolate fondue. The prices are a little high, but if you get two small pots - one for the cheese, one for the chocolate I think it would be enough food.
I love Extraordinary Desserts, too!
Best places for cakes in the South Bay:
Icing on the Cake - the boyfriend loves this place; I think their cakes are a little too sweet
Margaret's French Bakery - I've heard great things
Sugar Butter Flour - They have cakes and lots of cute fancy mini desserts.

I've seen lots of good reviews for Margaret's, but when Mavjop and I went there for an appointment to try cakes for our wedding cake, everything presented was stale because all the samples had been cut wafer thin and dried out from the time they must have been made. Needless to say, we didn't go with them for our cake.
Icing on the Cake seemed like cake out of a box to me. Maybe I've just had really good box cake.
Sugar Butter Flour was wonderful. Reminds me that I need to visit them again!
La Fondue.. . has been hit or miss with the quality of the items for dipping.

Zeni in west San Jose near Saratoga serves great Ethiopian food in a relaxed environment. I've had a couple birthdays there.

Spice route in milpitas is a nice spot, upscale without being pretentious and not at all clubby. Great food, good amount of seafood on the menu.
