We are going to be in Boston for one day from Texas, and we want to go to lunch at a non touristy, authentic italian gravy and pasta spot in the north end. What is a good affordable north end place the locals flock to?

Some red-sauce places that neighborhood folks tend to favor at lunch include Pagliuca's, L'Osteria, La Summa, Cantina Italiana, Mother Anna's, Joe Tecce's, and Ricardo's. I have had good red sauce lunches at some of these, and also at Massimino's and Rabia's.

I just had a great lunch at Massimino's on Endicott. The food is great and very reasonable..Veal entrees were $10-12..with a side of pasta. It's on Endicott; a little away from most of the ourist traffic.

I'd rate it higher than La Summa or Mother Anna's.

I love the food at Artu..and probably get takeout once a week..but I'm not fond of the dining room or bar and rarely eat there.

Well - here I go again - recommending Artu on Prince St. After eating there many times I am convinced this is the best Italian restaurant in the North End. Owned by Italians, Italian cooks and servers. The red sauce is like Nonna used to make and the macaroni is always al dente. The new-ish decor is very welcoming and the service is very good. Everything I have eaten there, from the Antipasto to Osso Bucco has been prepared to perfection.

If you're willing to make it an early dinner, this is my hands down favorite red sauce joint in the North End!
