the kind with fresh mango...Taiwanese style.

  1. I like the version at Bin Bin Konjac. It has shaved ice, konjac, cubed mango, and mango sorbet. There is one in Arcadia next to Sinbala and I think some other locations in the SGV.

The other bin bin konjac is on Valley next to Lollicup (barf) 2 plazas west of the Hilton. But personally, i'm not a big fan of their version as I have no need for "konjac".

Per my post 2 summers ago ( ) , I used to love the Shau May here: 830 E Valley Blvd Alhambra, CA 91801-5225, but they've since changed ownership - again - and stopped serving fresh mango shaved ice. This summer, we rejuvenated our mango shaved ice search and have returned to:

      Old Country Cafe:
      2 E Valley Blvd
      Alhambra, CA, 91801

They use a ice shaving machine imported from Taiwan. Ice is shaved from whole blocks of ice, not cubes, rendering perfect (uhh.. dare i say .. authentic...) texture. The fresh mango's soaked in passion fruit-ish syrup and the whole ordeal topped with plenty of condensed milk. The shaved ice itself is bottomless and we usually get it with Taiwanese pudding (flan/custard, whatever you wanna call it). The entire bowl runs $3.50-ish.

Sinbala, various Shau May and Tea Station all offer fresh mango shaved ice at the moment with Tea Station being preposterously expensive at nearly $5.Finally, you have the MONSTEROUS Pa Pa Walk mango shaved ice "Mountain" at $7. The extraordinary thing is that the Mountain is the size of your face, and topped with a scoop of ice cream; enough to feed about 3-4 people.

      Pa Pa Walk:
      227 W. Valley Blvd,
      San Gabriel, CA, 91776

The Shau May in Arcadia (next to Ranch 99) served mango shaved ice that came with extremely dark brown sugar syrup, but I prefer mango shaved ice topped with only condensed milk.

Thanks so much for the info. I know exactly what you mean by "perfect, authentic" texture. That's exactly what I like with my shave ice. Old Country Cafe is one of the rare places that offers that, and I used to go for their red bean shave ice. Didn't know they also have mango. What great news!

      2. re: lileor

My favorite item at Bin Bin is konjac with taro ball and red bean. Their version of mango ice is a bit overwhelming for me.

      3. Went to Old Country Cafe twice in the last couple weeks. BEST mango shave ice to my liking. Perfect texture of the ice (yes, the texture matters), perfectly sweentened mango mixtures, and portion is just right for me. No huge pile of ice, no ice cream nor sherbet on top....just the way I like it!!!
