Shave Ice in Pasadena?

katkoupai Jul 3, 2007 03:07 PM

The recent post on shave ice at Shakas has made me think about shave ice quite a bit. Aside from Shakas in Alhambra and Monterey Park, is there anywhere else in or near Pasadena that has really good shave ice? I want to buy some this week. I was thinking about the halo halo at Barrio Fiesta in Highland Park that someone recently posted about. I know there have been recent recs on this matter, but I have forgotten where they are. Thank you. Also, boba recs nearby would be great.

I really like the Taiwanese style shaved ice at Sinbala in Arcadia, especially since they drizzle melted brown sugar over the ice. They have lots of boba drinks there too so you can kill two birds with one stone!

I noticed that Phoenix in South Pas has shave ice on the menu. I've never tried it there, so don't know what they're like. I did get their red bean drink, not the best I've ever had, but it was pretty good and very refreshing. I am so grateful that Phoenix had opened there.

Thank you. I actually go to Phonix for their drinks, but I never noticed the shave ice on the menu. I appreciate this info. :)

I was just at Taipan Cafe near PCC this week and they had a really delicious looking shaved ice. (Didn't get a chance to try it myself yet though...) It's Chinese/Taiwanese style shaved ice, but sure is a lot closer than going down to Shakas.

I saw a sign recently for a shave ice place that is 'coming soon' on Colorado Blvd near PCC. I think it was on the north side of the street near Luigi Ortega's?

Maui Wowees, Smoothie joint, don't think they are putting in shaved ice, (I'll double check) but two really nice young gun ho guys, should be open in 2 months I hope everyone will give them a chance.

Thanks. This sounds like a good location for a shop like this. Hopefully, it'll get a lot of customers from PCC.

            katkoupai,

In addition to B-Man's, you should also check out Aloha Food Factory in Alhambra for Hawaiian Shave Ice.

Also, don't overlook the many, many places in SGV that have Tawainese Shaved Ice (and all these places have boba as well). Check out Shau Mei, Sin Ba La, Won Won Kitchen, just to name a few.

Although the shave ice at Aloha Food Factory is okay, it is very expensive compared to other places. When I went there it was almost $8.

They serve shave ice at B-Man's Teriyaki, which is in the same complex as HOWS market at San Gabriel & Huntington Dr. I've never tried it, but they do a nice job with their foodstuffs (teriyaki chicken & beef bowls, and teriyaki burgers). The owner is originally from Hawaii, I believe, so at least there's a chance that the shave ice offering is reasonably authentic.

Thanks, Jack. I read ipsedixit's recent post about B-Man's, but I didn't know they had shave ice. It sounds like a pretty good place to check out. :)

My daughter and I love the shaved ice at B-Man's! I definitely recommend it, and they are quite large.
