    1. We were in Wellfleet last week and were blown away by the lobster roll at the Friendly Fisherman in Eastham (it's right on Rt. 6). Grilled hot dog bun, one piece of Romaine to stabilize the massive amount of lightly dressed lobster meat = $15.50.

I'll second the FF, my favorite on the Cape for lobster rolls and fried seafood.....and it comes with a nice pile of fries too! :)

            1. re: Science Chick

Does the Friendly Fisherman have good clam chowder? What have you tried at the Friendly Fisherman? Do they have a good fisherman's platter?

                1. re: buffet king

Unfortunately, their chowder is absolutely horrendous....I don't know what they are thinking. All the fried items are just terrific...not greasy, crisp, clean oil, etc. Incredibly fresh seafood (from their own market!). The platter is massive...I would recommend splitting. Then head next door to Nauset ice cream for a delicious frozen dessert!

Their fried stuff is all good-shrimp,clams,scallops-Have been going there for many years.I think their fried stuff is better than Arnolds although we like Arnolds and has a betteratmosphere to be in.(Raw bar and liquor).Have not had the chowder at Friendly Fisherman.

                        1. re: daver

I have been to Arnolds several times. I like their burgers and fried clams. I will definately try the Friendly Fisherman. Thanks for the information.

We did a lobster roll fest in May. FF is the best for the price. It has some more mayo than others but darn good. Moby Dick's was good but more money. Sir Crickets was good, less money but a ton of mayo. Raw Bar in Popponesset is THE best.

                                1. re: phelana

Just returned from a week in Orleans. The first lobster roll of the week was at the Sesuit Harbor Cafe in Dennis. Fun place to sit outside and watch the action at the marina. BYOB. Good fisherman's platter - lots of nicely breaded clams scallops and fish. Not blown away by the lobster roll - tomatoes and lettuce and too much mayo for my taste. Tried Young's Fish Market in Orleans while driving by one afternoon. Just a market here - take the food to go only. This one hit the spot - lots more impeccably fresh lobster - just lobster and not too much mayo - no filler. Only downer was that the roll was not toasted. But for $8.50, an incredible deal! Much better than the first for almost twice the price. Returned again to Young's yesterday for a second roll - can't beat the view sitting outside on the bench watching the boats come in and out of the harbor.

                        2. Was just at the Raw Bar in Popponessett (Mashpee) today for lunch. Lobster roll was outstanding. Had to split it, but it costs $22! Ouch! The rum punch made me feel better. <grin>

                            1. Haha, clearly your opinion hasn't changed from your first post in this thread.

For another South Coast recommendation, I'll throw the Oxford Creamery in Mattapoisett out there. 9.99 gets you a perfectly grilled roll with fries. At that price it is sometimes hard for me to resist getting two.

                                1. Hate to report but I had a lobster roll at Freestone's for lunch today. $16.99 and was large enough, hardly any mayo (a bit on the dry side actually) but hardly ANY chunks of lobster as what was there was flaked and chopped into little tiny pieces. Not what I expect to find in a quality lobster roll. Disappointing.

                                    1. Just back from a week on the Cape and had three lobster rolls. Never thought I'd say it, but that was enough for a week...First one was at Sesuit Harbor Cafe, then Burger Queen in Provincetown, and finally the Friendly Fisherman in Eastham. Now for the rankings...I thought the Sesuit roll was the winner. It was a nice size, had lots of big chunks of meat, and a lovely toasted bun. I realize the ambiance may make the food taste better than some other spots, but even without the pleasant surroundings, I think I would still rate their roll #1. Second place, surprisingly, goes to the fast-food joint Burger Queen on Commercial Street in P-town. Not enormous, but with a nice grilled bun and just the right amount of mayo. The price was a reasonable $9. The Friendly Fisherman's was just TOO BIG for me. If I'm going to eat a whole 1-pound lobster I want it with some nice drawn butter, not an overwhelmed bun with no mayonnaise. The meat was tasty, but to me it was over the top.

                                        1. re: naneharvey

haaaa..Nane, too funny, too much lobster, NEVER...thanks for the report. When the crowd wanes I will head up to FF. Yesterday Sesuit was a mob scene.

                                          • 100%, no doubt about it whatsoever, The Raw Bar in Hyannis on Ocean St. right
next to Hy-Line. Best I have ever had and could not imagine better. I was skeptical of the $25 price tag, but it was worth every penny. Mounds of cold, clean lobster, with light mayonaise and a large sized bun...no yucky celery or onions. I know some people like em hot and buttered with no mayo, but it is a matter of preference. It took 10 minutes of eating the lobster off the top with a fork until I could eat it like a sandwich. It is also the Billy Costa (TV Diner) #1 rated lobster roll in New England

                                              1. re: MacshashRIP

Sorry, but TV Diner's endorsement holds as much sway with me as Rachael Ray's. Read: "NONE". The Raw Bar certainly puts out a huge roll for it's $25 tariff, but I prefer fresh picked meat, not what they use which is frozen from a can. Some can't tell the difference but it's like night and day to me. Try one from the Friendly Fisherman and you'll see the difference!

                                                  1. re: CapeCodGuy

honestly, my knee jerk reaction to the frozen thing (I will call them to confirm that this is true) was, "Wow, that's pretty lame", but as I think about it, for me it's all about TASTE. This meat was clean, fresh tasting, and didn't have that weird flavor that many lobsters have, particularly in the claw meat, which I have always found to be similar to the smell of a cigarette ashtray!
In the seafood business, you have to remember that in many cases frozen is ironically fresher than not, what with the flash freezing on boats and stability of the medium. Many top end sushi chefs actually prefer frozen top quality Nori than fresh for this reason.

                                                      1. re: MacshashRIP

I too love Raw Bar...FF as well..

                                                          1. re: MacshashRIP

Maybe true for Nori, but certainly not for lobster. What could taste fresher than a lobster that was trapped in the ocean a day earlier, alive before it was cooked, picked from it's shell 15 minutes later, and sold in the fishmonger case immediately after (as is the case at most good markets, like Joe's in Sandwich) or great shacks with markets attatched like FF. Sorry, but what makes you think calling the Raw Bar will get you a straight answer? I KNOW what they use and it ain't fresh. And it's certainly not the best to be found on Cape.
