Is The Bear Cafe a good spot for dinner? Staying at Inn @ Millstream, looking for a close good restaurant.

It's about a 10 min drive towards Saugerties on 212.

The Bear Cafe is a reliable good choice. If you have a craving for Chinese, the Little Bear is exceptional and right on the stream. It's on the site of the Woodstock Playhouse.

Geographical Error Woodstock Playhouse is at Rt 212 and Rt 375 in Woodstock. The Bear cafe is on Rt 212 in Bearsville, next to the Bearsville Theater and WDST Radio station

Im confused. Is Bear Cafe Chinese? or is that different from Little Bear? Does New World have a liq license? thx

Bear Cafe is upscale American (i think that's how it's billed).
Little Bear (next door) is Chinese. New World is eclectic, with focus on fresh ingredients (greens come from their garden, etc.) and has full bar + wine + a pretty extensive beer menu.

I cannot say anything about The Bear but here is a lunch suggestion:

We really like Joshua's for lunch, right in the middle of town. Great soups, salads and other items with a light mideast flair.

We used to LOVE Joshua's. Haven't been up there in many years and am very happy to learn it's still there. Need to plan a road trip...

Agree with Joshua's. Have been a few times for lunch and am always pleased.

I would choose New World over Bear Cafe, any day. Bear Cafe is a little uptight with a more conservative, easy menu (great for taking parents), but is pretty spendy and other than the view (which is pretty great), not out of the ordinary. It's a good meal, but not anything super memorable.
New World has a quirky atmosphere (which can be a bit of a turnoff at first - now I embrace it as long as I don't get seated in that back room!), but the food is pretty darn great.
2 weeks ago had the grilled mission figs w/gorgonzola ice cream. Pretty much out of this world.

For what it's worth, I would definitely skip Little Bear, unless you are looking for Americanized Chinese food with a great view (hey somtimes that fits the bill, given your guests).
