NY Hound Not Fooling Around

guttergourmet Jul 1, 2007 04:58 PM

2-1/2 days in Dallas. First night when I got in Stephen Pyles-great cevich sampler, foie gras on pork belly, dougnuts with espresso flan-delish. Then up at 6am for the 240 mile drive to Lockhart. Kreutz Market was unbelievable-I had two thick rare prime ribs (better than NY), a hot sausage, pit ham, and 3/4 lb of brisket with a Big Red, lemonade and iced tea. No forks, no sauce and no sides-gotta love it! Then went around the block to Smittys to compare prime rib (almost but not quite as good) and a great pork chop. Happily drove the 240 miles back to Dallas. finally, Javier's was closed for lunch, so I tried Avila's instead. Incredible carne asada, cheese enchilada and guisado de puerco. Converted little house on Maple Avenue. Great.

Kudos to you guttergourmet. You really made the most of your 2-1/2 days and hit some great places. Personally, I think Avila's is such a wonderful hidden gem. If you ever get back, try the mole.

Wow. Well done. Was this trip inspired by visiting the new Hill Country BBQ in NY?

Haven't been yet-but I think I will now be sorely disappointed when I do.

Yeah...you probably will be disapointed since you ate the real deal first. My friend in NY is happy enough that they just have Blue Bell Ice Cream...

I'm impressed. Next time, go south a few miles from Lockhart to Luling. City Market also has wonderful 'que.

Agreed. And don't miss Black's next time! I'll be hitting Kreuz for the first time in a few weeks, but Black's still has my fave brisket of all time.

I don't know that Kreuz's can dethrone Black's for brisket, but as guttergourmet wrote, the prime rib at Kreuz's is awesome. guttergourmet should have also detoured to Llano on the way back to Dallas. LOL.

I just had Smitty's this weekend. The hot sausage there is amazing.

We've got a place in NYC called Hill Country- you'd swear that you were in Kreutz.
