I tried the banana strawberry smoothie at Penguin's Frozen Yogurt tonight. It's the best frozen yogurt smoothie that I've had in a long time. Props to Penguin's.

  1. I've had a really good banana smoothie here myself, also had good plain frozen yogurt once. However, several other times the yogurt was downright bizarre and really quite bad. Strange fluctuation in quality at my nearby location.

    1. Back in the mid to late 80's, Penquins was THE place to go, kinda like Pinkberry's is now. They do say trends are cyclical. Anyways, back in the day, I use to love the peanut butter yogurt. Now they are harder to find, but since yogurt is in an upswing again, who knows, maybe they will be reopening stores all over the place.

I remember those days, and I actually wish they'd come back. It was sad when Penguin's started disappearing. There used to be one in Northridge-- gone now. :(

I went to the one in La Canada this past weekend. I wonder how many are left now.

There is still a Penguin's in Northridge.I just went there last week. It is in the center at Reseda and Devonshire. I remember the one at Devonshire and Balboa which is trhe one that you are probably referring to.

Chuck, are you serious? I thought the Reseda/Devonshire location closed down! I'm really happy to know this. :)

      2. Penguin's still exists?? Oh man, I have fond memories of frozen yogurt at Penguin's in Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco. I assumed they went out of business years ago...

There are a few left still. The only one I know of is in La Canada, CA.

I know of at least one in AZ (the only one I've ever been to). I actually didn't even know this place existed until seeing the AZ location a year a go. Wasn't aware it was once a large chain before this thread.

That's neat. I'm in Los Angeles, and I never knew Penguin's was also in Arizona. :)

        2. They have an official website:
But it doesn't offer much info on locations or menu items. Also, found a link for a pdf menu:
The Penguins in AZ appears to be a different company than the ones in CA...The CA ones are actually Penguin's Place, but no one ever called it that.

          1. I used to love their Pina Colada smoothie when I worked at the Lakewood Mall (CA) in the early 90's. I think there's still one in Long Beach but I've never been. Anyone?

Believe there is one across from Cerritos Mall, near Skate Depot.

There is one on PCH near Torrance Blvd., here in the So. Bay. I like the vanilla yogurt and add fresh strawberries and when I am hormonally challenged, hot fudge. Really good. I too remember when Penguins was IT. I also loved Humphrey's-the place that did "mix-ins" before Coldstone Creamery.

The is a Pinkberry's trying to open on PCH and Aviation. I hope it doesn't. I don't want to loose Penguins or the little place in the mini-mall that has Two-for Tuesdays....

Unfortunately, like Skate Depot, that Penguin's is long gone. Does anyone else remember Heidi's Frogen Yozurt? (Suddenly, I feel like I am 16 again with really high bangs.)

                  1. re: CaliforniaCat

Skate Depot is still open. I guess the closest Penguin's is in Downey on Lakewood Blvd. Yes, I remember Heidi's but preferred Penguin's. I use to go to the one that was by the Bally's on Del Amo. That has been long gone.

                    1. re: CaliforniaCat

Exactly-- 16 again, with feathered or crimped hair.

I do remember Heidi's, but I too preferred Penguin's. I'm not sure why, but my sister and I really loved Penguin's.

When I went to the one in La Canada recently, it wasn't quite as good as I remembered, but it was still very good. I think nostalgia has something to do with it. I think I'd be happy if there was a Penguin's for every Pinkberry here in Southern California.
