Best fried shrimp in French Quarter?

  • 3

Where can you find the best fried shrimp in the French Quarter? I like more shrimp than breading on it.

  1. Forget about the Quarter--jump in a cab and head for Jack Dempsey's on Poland Ave., at the very edge of the Ninth Ward before you go over the St. Claude Ave. bridge. But do call them first, because they're open for limited hours post-Katrina, on account of the labor shortage and other factors affecting the Bywater neighborhood. Best fried seafood in Orleans Parish, hands down.

I like Jack Dempsey's as well. A real neighborhood joint. It's actually smack in the middle of the 9th Ward, not on the edge. It's just before the canal that divides the upper and lower 9th Ward.

Thanks for the recs. I did not know of this restaurant, but then, it's been decades, since we lived in NOLA. We've done several trips to NO & The Coast, where it seemed that we dined on only fried shrimp and gumbo. In days gone by, the best fried shrimp were at Marquez Brother [SP?] at Chef Pass, but they blew away with Camile. Even better, but not in NOLA was a little place in Gulfport, MS, Magnusen's House of Seafood, with a Grade D sanitation rating. OK, you didn't want to dine in, but theirs' were the best in all of the Earth. Bericeve's in Biloxi was close, but alas, they are long gone too.

Gotta' get to Jack Dempsey's in Aug, as our July trip got moved.

Again, thanks for the recs. since great fried Gulf shrimp are exquisite. B-I-L sends us pink and whites, in their respective seasons, and my wife is a great NO-influenced cook, but even fresh off the boat, and into the dry-ice, then a quick flight to PHX, and into the hot oil, they are just not the same.
