Best ice cream bar is at the Costco food court

For years I've seen the sign for the $1.50 hand dipped ice cream bar at the Los Feliz Costco food court and decided to try one tonight. It was fantastic !!!

Big "super premium" vanilla ice cream bar hand dipped in chocolate and covered with lots of crunchy roasted almonds. Dove bars or Balboa bars in Balboa don't even come close.

  1. I've heard there's a good ice cream bar that's only available at Disneyland.

You are right. They have a great ice cream at Disneyland, nubi. I have not been there in a long time so I don't recall how it was but all I could remember was it was very good.

    2. Sadly, it is no longer offered at the Marina location.

Incorrect. I just had my first one yesterday, and it was at the Marina location.

And it's not for the faint-hearted. It's a huge bar absolutely smothered in milk chocolate and then completely encrusted with chopped almonds. The thing is so enormous and heavy, they have to serve it on a plate!

How much you'll enjoy it will probably depend on how much you like the Nestle-grade milk chocolate topping. Either way, though, it's certainly quite a bang for your buck-fifty.

        1. re: Arthur

Mmmm that sounds so good. I just looked up how many calories are in this thing at calorieking.com and it says 1 bar has 870 calories and supplies 60% of your recommended daily value of cholesterol and 66% of fat, and 140% of saturated fat. Oh my... but you have to splurge sometimes, huh?

          1. re: monkuboy

ya. should come marked with "NOT FOR EATING WITH HOT DOG" sticker. oww... my tummy...

      2. I totally agree about the ICB but even better is the Kirkland Half Gallons in the Freezer case which have the same Vanilla for only 8.50 for a Gallon (enough to make several bars), you won't believe how good it is? Maybe the best icecream anywhere?

They call it "Super Premium" not just "Premium".

          1. re: monku

Super Premium is for the riff-raff. I only eat Uber Premium Ice Cream.

        2. I don't know why the Costco ice cream bar doesn't get more love.

Given the quality of ice cream, the size, and the chocolate, it's easily about a $1 cheaper than any other ice cream bar that's prepared à la minute.

Heck, for those wondering whether a Costco membership is "worth it" if you buy just one bar ever week, you've "earned" your membership fee back and more.

Who cares about the dogs -- be they Hebrew or Kirkland -- go for the freaking ice cream, esp. when the weather is so damn cooperative.

Just an FYI: No one needs a Costco membership to shop at the food court.

            1. re: PommeDeGuerre

Depends on which Costco you go to, roughly 75% of the Costco's I've been to have the food court inside and you aren't allowed to go that way unless you are returning an item.

              1. re: polldeldiablo

So say you're returning an item or say you're buying alcohol or filling a prescription or seeing the optometrist (none of these require a membership). They don't ask for your card in the food line.

                1. re: polldeldiablo

No one has ever questioned me when I've walked in through the exit.

                  1. re: polldeldiablo

Interesting, all the Costcos I have been to have the food court outside...

                      1. re: Michelle

If you mean outside, as in outside the building, the only one I've ever seen like that was in Temecula, CA.

Outside in the SoCal Costco's I've been to - Los Feliz, Burbank, San Diego...

                          1. re: happybaker

outside also includes Northridge, Torrance, Hawthorne, Van Nuys & Culver City

Fountain Valley too, although I think Garden Grove's might be indoor.

                    1. re: ipsedixit

I've never had the almond ice cream bar (my husband has, and loves it.)

For me - it's tacky, it's tawdry but it's oh so tasty - the swirl frozen yogurt.

Some days, it's lunch. And I'm fine with that.

                    2. Agreed about the ice cream bar at Costco food court. It's the best, simply the best. You can get it with or without nuts on it. I think the nuts are diced almonds. If you are in Hawaii on vacation and go to the Costco there it's super cool because the nuts they use is macadamia nuts. Impressive.

For those of you who go to Costco food court and do not see the sign for the ice cream just ask for it. At the Alhambra Costco for sometime they took down the sign for some reason and I thought it was not being sold any longer but just for the heck of it I asked why it was not being sold any longer and I got the answer that they do still sell it. Well then I bought one. I am not sure if the sign is still down or if they put a sign up again but regardless of the sign it was still for sale so if your Costco does not have the sign then ask for it, it might be for sale still.

Thanks for the heads up on the Alhambra site as I work close by. I had my first ice cream bar last weekend and it was FANTASTIC after gardening for an hour in the sun.

                      2. Hubby brought one home tonite-with the almonds. It's very big! Had a couple bites-YUMMY!

I'm impressed it made it all the way home. Usu. my ice cream bar barely makes it through the walk back from the food court window to my car.

Your husband has quite the self-control ... you got yourself a good catch it seems.

                            1. re: ipsedixit

Not only self control, they melt very easily. They melt so fast that by the time I sit down and start chomping on it they get mushy and crack so I have to be careful how I eat it. But yes they are great. I feel like buying a few and putting them in an ice chest full of ice and bringing them home that way and put in freezer at home.

                          2. PLEASE BRING BACK THE BEST ICE CREAM BAR ON EARTH!!! Even if you have to increase the price, bring it back. It is my ALLL TIME FAVORITE dessert on this planet. It is my super indulgence for having to wait in line on every visit to Costco! It makes the whole visit worth while. PLEASE COSTCO, please bring it back, especially in this very hot summer. I will pay up to $2.50 for one since it has the most almonds of any bar!..pLEASE. a 10 YR COSTCO MEMBER!!!

almonds skyrocketed in price, maybe that's why it's no longer on the menu? I'm saddened by this news.

Eh I was fortunate, the second they removed their ice cream bars from the menu, the ice cream from their freezer section had Talenti Gelato bars for something like 12 for $15. Far better and cheaper than their ice cream bars.

Costco Alhambra has had Talenti Gelato for quite some time now.

They also had 3-pack pints as well.

I'll hit the Los Feliz store this weekend (have to be there anyway) and hope for the best!

Yes, they have Talenti gelato bars. No, they aren't better than Costco's made to order ice cream bars, and Costco's had more than twice as much ice cream in them.

                                        1. re: PommeDeGuerre

Well I have the unfortunate problem of the ice cream bars always disappearing before I get into the car so I can't really get them to go. This heat doesn't help either.

                                    2. It's so big and heAvy it wants to seperate itself from the bar. Gnarly value.

                                      1. It's on the secret menu.

                                        1. The MDR store says that discontinued it 6 months ago.

                                              2. I bought a box of 15 Haagen Daz vanilla chocolate covered almond bars a few days ago and the kids loved it! Usually I get the Magnum bars but they stopped carrying them for some reason? For under $11 for 15 bars it was a good buy.

Never heard of the Magnum Bars but I do love the Haagen Daz. They are not as good as the Costco hand dipped that we all are saddened by the discontinuing of, but the Haagen Daz are quite good nevertheless.
