After reading the similar post (http://www.chowhound.com/topics/409033) on bbq in Tallahassee, I wondered what views were on Gainesville barbecue. Any opinions?

  1. When I went to school there, it was Sonny's BBQ. I graduated in 1982, so take that with a grain of salt. :)

    1. My son, who is from Tallahassee, swears by Backyard BBQ in Newberry, just a few minutes away. If you are willing to travel 45 minutes or so ( I am), then Frog's in Williston is wonderful. Been there for years (although rebuilt after a fire) and is a true BBQ joint in every sense of the word. I have not personally been to Backyard. Generally, a chain like Sonny's won't be the best in town, although I think that Sonny started the chain in Gainesville, so it may be the exception.

      1. I spent a year in Gainesille (91-92) and ate a lot of barbecue. Some at Sonny's but mostly at David's on NW 39th Ave.

Speaking of Gainesville, we also ate a lot at Hogan's Heros. I see they have changed their name to Hogan's "Great Sandwiches." Gee, I wonder why? LOL
