The Ultra-Ghetto 'Creme Brulee'

  • 5

This is something I do all the time, but have never spoken of. Why? Because, well, it's embarrassing. But in the name of good Chow, I shall let you in on my dirty little secret.

I take a few store-bought pudding cups (ie. vanilla snack-pak) and empty them into a ramekin. Smooth them out, and top them with raw / demarara / brown sugar, and torch them a la creme brulee (or use the oven broiler).

Voila! Instant creme brulee. If like me, you're in Ontario, I suggest using the President's Choice Vanilla Bean pudding as your base. It's very tasty and makes for a very successful creme brulee-esque experience. :)

  1. Oh the humanity! ha ha pixelchef, i'm ashamed to admit that, though repulsed, i am also strangely intrigued, as a person who adores creme brulee. I just might give it a try; I wonder where I can fnd vanilla bean pudding where I live. Did you come up with this recipe on your own or did you find it somewhere?

      1. how very sandra lee of you!

If I had a creme brulee torch, I might do the same so I'll shut my mouth (:

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe the broiler in the toaster oven might work?

        2. Love it, thanks for posting. And I am someone who would never use cake mix for example nor do I eat any kind of commercial pudding but... I think the PC reference sealed the deal.
