Quite liked Coda
First visit to the new spot that replaced beloved South End dive Tim's Tavern. Nice clean space, a bit reminiscent of Audubon Circle in design aesthetic, though much smaller. Some decent fancy cocktails at nice prices (~$6), a very thoughtful, modest wine list, whites under $40, reds under $60, 4 of each by the glass, plus a sparkler. Enjoyed the turky/portobello meatloaf, which is better than Columbus Cafe's and not quite as good as the Franklin's, with nice thin asparagus and some of those ubiquitous gluey mashed potatoes. The $9 cheeseburger, which can't possibly live up to Tim's, is actually respectable, cooked properly to order (I'd guess it's a half-pound patty), though it's got another of those brioche-y rolls I don't really like, and very good skinny fries. A $17 hanger steak frites, pretty much nothing over $20, a very respectable $5 salad. I found the whole experience very edifying, a fine, thoughtful, very nicely priced neighborhood restaurant. Very friendly, competent service. Lots of nice neighbors as early patrons. I'll be returning soon to explore the menu.

I am surprised that so many people think that the Franklin has good meatloaf, everytime i have had it, it is virtually inedible. The rest of the food is lacking at the very best IMO.

That's a strong statement--how so?

I had a dinner at the Franklin very recently. Its weeknight crowds have certainly diminished over the past year, much easier to get seated without a 90-minute wait (we waited about 30 minutes at 9pm). The food was just as good as I've always found it, which is to say, very good and very reasonable. The place is slightly refreshed in look: new paint, new floor, new lighting, but very much the same atmosphere-wise.
I'm surprised to hear such a negative perception of it, especially the meatloaf (off the menu until fall for now) with that lovely fig gravy. The zucchini salad is back on, a great summer dish.

Agreed. That meatloaf is absolutely sublime. This coming from someone who would never consider herself much of a meatloaf fan. Really really good.

I order that meatloaf almost every time I go that it is on the menu. I too am surprised the negative impression of it.
