Long posts We've (mostly) read; can we compress the "Read" portion?

I have noticed that many of the posts I read will come up with my already-read posts compressed, but with the option to "Expand All" should I choose. However, with some of the so-called mega-posts going on, I don't see an option to, say, "Compress Unread." When dealing with a post with over 200 replies, it becomes rather cumbersome to re-read every post, and thus some very worthy posts go unread.

Can this option (Expand All, vis-a-vis unread posts) be extended to ALL postings, rather than just some? I don't seem to see a logic to the application yet.

Any answers?

Thank you,

  1. Why would you need to re-read every post when only the ones you've already read are "compressed."? The ones you have not read are the "un-compressed ones," making it easy for you to read only the new stuff without bothering to read the old stuff.

Of course, the next time you open the thread, when those ones, which were "new" and "uncompressed" before, will now be compressed so that you know you don't have to re-read them.

Or, are you asking of for the ability to manually "compress" each post as you read it so that if you don't finish reading that thread in one sitting you can later come back and "finish" where you left off?
