Anything Worthwhile on Rt. 78 b'twn Birmingham and Holly Springs

Going on road trip this weekend to the Hillcountry of Mississippi.
Does anyone know of anything roadside on Rt. 78, specifically between Birmingham and Holly Springs? On previous journeys, I've just winged it and found bbq shacks or places to get some good fried catfish. Another time, I was forced to go to Sonic. I never want to do that again. Thanks.

  1. Sadly, there really is nothing. Lots of fast food. A few BBQ shacks.
And don't even attempt going to a local place on a Sunday.
    All are closed.

Doc, I hate that I just saw your post today. The next time that you head across on Hwy. 78, exit off in Fulton, MS. Out in the country around Fulton and Smithville are several steak / catfish houses. The only name that I can remember off the top of my head, at this time, is the County Barn near Smithville. These are no frill places that cater to the rural folk of the area. We hit some of these places occasionally when we go up to visit family. My husband usually gets a steak which is served with the basic iceburg / toamato / artificial bacon salad (yuck!) with a great homemade dressing and a baked potato. I prefer the fried catfish. You can always count on fresh, homemade cole slaw and hushpuppies. Beverage choices usually consist of tea (sweet, of course), water, or cola. No wine and no beer. It is not fine dining by any stretch, but it is good, reasonably priced, and you get to check out the local flavor.

Did you go to the Hillcountry picnic? If so, I am curious as to how it was?
