Free-Range Farm Eggs?

OrganicLife Jun 26, 2007 11:48 AM

I've been going to Stone Barns for eggs (and produce) but I was curious if there are any other farms in Westchester/CT to get free range farm eggs? Some folks tend to hoard the eggs so it's not unusual for them to be all out by the time I arrive. Just curious if there are similar farms to buy eggs from in the area?

I heard that there was someone selling eggs at the Westport Farmers market (Thursdays, 10-2 at the Playhouse parking lot). As all of the vendors there have to be certified organic, and only locally grown, you might find what you're looking for.

I really like the Westport Farmers' Market; there's one on Sundays, too, at the Senior Center (open from 10 to 2). The organic eggs I bought there were great. But do note that not everything sold at the market is certified organic. You can double check on the web site--or just ask the vendors.

Also, the Pasta Nostra guy sells olive oil that he imports from Italy, so, obviously, that's not locally grown. I think most everything else is.

there's also a great farmers market on saturdays in new caanan (i think?? it's either new caanan or darien...i'm from NY but always get those mixed up!!)

also, check local gourmet shops or small organic grocers...they tend to stock free range sometimes

if you get the chance to go to a farmers market with a good poultry/game bird purveyor, try to find some duck or phesant eggs! they're in season right now. duck eggs are a better deal...they're twice as big as chicken eggs!

Thanks so much for the heads up about this farm! I'm going to go as soon as I get the chance. I have been just craving good homegrown eggs.

Much better, IMO, is New Pond Farm 101 Marchant rd, in west redding. Eggs arrive at 3pm. Milk is excellent, yogurt fantastic. Leave your $$ in the coffee can in the fridge.

There's a farmer at the Greenwich farmers market that sells only eggs. Can't say for sure, but my guess would be that they are both organic and free range. It's from 9:30 to 12 Saturday mornings. Regarding the other poster, New Canaan's farmers market is Saturday mornings also, from 10 to 12 or 1, I believe.

I finally made it to the Westport Farmers Market this morning and I was very pleasantly surprised. Very nice people selling great stuff.

Got eggs, heirloom tomatoes, scapes, squashes, berries, goat cheese, oysters, corn, and bread. I will be back next Thursday!
