French Onion Soup-Scottsdale

I absolutely love french onion and am always on the quest for the best cup.

I'm looking for suggestions for the best french onion in the scottsdale area and/or periphery (phoenix also welcome for future reference, of course). Thus far, I have to say, one of my absolute favorites has been from Zinc Bistro. Any suggestions for locations that top this?

  1. Voltaire has the best French Onion Soup I have had in the Valley. They use veal stock and plenty of onions and cheese. It was exceptional.

However, they close for the summer at the end of this week so you either have to hustle over or wait until September.

Thanks for the rec. I've driven past and noticed this place a hundred times, but have never known if it were any good. I'll have to check it out.

      Keep the suggestions coming.

Also, to add to the original post, I'd appreciate any suggestions for locations that serve quality french onion with a bit more of a casual price point/atmosphere, too. Thanks.

Casey Moore's in Tempe has a great french onion soup.

    2. I don't think I can top Zinc or Voltaire, but if you're looking for good onion soup in a casual atmosphere with good draft beer, I'd recommend Mac's Broiler and Tap on the SW corner of Guadalupe and McClintock in Tempe.

      1. i really like the french onion soup at claim jumper. shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. ;)

        1. the french onion soup at fenix is pretty darn fantastic - its on 40th st and camelback, and is also open for super late dinners, too...

anything else you recommend from fenix during the late-night? i saw they're doing that for the summer and need to get over there. ever had their short ribs? i've been craving some and don't feel like the project during the summer. ;)

              hi there :)

yes - i thought their mussels were amazing, the salad caprice was great *something about the dijon vinagrette on there*, the escargot is a butter drenched garlic explosion *and thats a good thing* and their braised short rib sliders come with their own gravy boat of sauce. the cream cheese on the slider sounded like a bad idea until you taste it - it gets all warm and melty and fabulous.

sounds great, thanks. i'll check it out and report back. love that there's another late-night option in the area, besides delux (not that it's not great in it's own right).

np - i hope you like it..i dig that spot. the chef is great, and so is the music.

          2. My favorite three are:

City Hall Steakhouse - rich broth and big chunks of onion with Gruyere on top
Wally's Pub on 44th & Camelback - Spicy Guiness based stock, really good
Fenix - which has already been mentioned, but I'll second it
