St. Paul Farmer's Market Cheese

We bought some cheese on Saturday at the St. Paul Farmer's Market. We thought it was from Lovetree Farms, but according to their website, they only do sheep's milk cheese and we bought a bandage wrapped goat cheddar. I don't believe Eichten's does cheese like this. Can anyone tell us who was selling this cheese?

  1. Interesting. I wasn't there, but that sounds like either Fiscalini (from California) or maybe bandaged billy by Carr Valley (central Wisconsin).

When I googled it, it did indeed sound like a cheese from Carr Valley. They are not on the St. Paul Farmer's Market website as one of their vendors. Can anyone verify either way?

By the way, the cheese is absolutely amazing wherever it comes from. And as far as the Lovetree Farms cheeses go, I would recommend them as well.

The St. Paul Farmer's Market is limited to local vendors who may sell only items they have grown/produced themselves.

Carr Valley in La Valle WI makes a Bandaged Billy, but they are 200 miles away.

Natural Valley in Hustler WI makes a Castle Rock Reserve, but they are about 170 miles away.

        California is not an option.

However, Bass Lake in Somerset WI has goat cheeses, and they are only 40 miles away. Maybe it was them?

The website for Bass Lake doesn't show anything like bandage wrapped goat cheddar. The mystery continues . . .

      2. What a coincidence! Last night, I had two mystery cheeses from the St. Paul Farmer's market. The person who brought them couldn't remember the cheese names or the vendor.

One was a wonderful goat or sheep cheddar. Even better was an "ugly" blue cheese - stinky and scary-looking, but amazingly delicious.

I checked the web sites of Lovetree, Carr Valley, and Fiscalini, but didn't see anything similar. (Re Fiscalini - I thought only local/Midwest vendors were allowed at this market?) Does anyone know who sells an ugly-but-yummy blue cheese at the St. Paul Farmer's Market?

I can't speak to the bandaged cheese, but I do recall that Lovetree has a good ugly blue. Really rank looking but soooo tasty. I also like their Fishbait.

I'll have to take a look this weekend. I love the Lovetree cheese is horrendously overpriced and the other offerings (Eichten's) etc were just plain boring. Two things I'd love to see at the St. Paul Market - better and affordable cheese and mushrooms.

Overpriced? On what basis do you say that? Its excellent cheese at prices very comparable if not cheaper than what you would pay for lesser quality cheeses at any number of stores.
I think what you really mean is "more than what I want to spend" which is completely different than overpriced.
