Best Restaurant(s) in San Francisco

My wife and I will be spending a week in San Francisco next month, and
would like to splurge on one fine meal.

Is there any consensus on what the best restaurant in town is? If so,
which is it? Or if there are several contenders for that "best" title,
which are they?

In town, please. We won't have a car, and won;;t easily be able to get someplace like the French Laundry (and probably couldn't get a reservation there anyway).

  1. There's no consensus - even highly-rated (by mainstream press), heavily starred restaurants seem to have as many detractors as fans - but if you can tell us where you're coming from (maybe even what your favorite restaurants are), which cuisines you prefer, dollar amount per person (including beverages, tax and tip), and where you're staying, we may be able to come up with the best restaurant for *you*.

We like almost all kinds of food. We're willing to splurge for one night we're there, so price isn't an important consideration. We're staying near Union Square.

    2. A good discussion for you to probably start with is the most recent "Top 5" debate:

      Ask questions from there...

        Great, That's very helpful, thanks.

      2. As mentioned, no consensus...a few of the usual suspects for high end fine dining (near the French Laundry) level, in SF, are:

        Campton Place
Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton
        Michael Mina
        Fleur de Lys

The bulk of SF and the BAs food greatness is in the outstanding "mid-range slightly more casual" places (Aziza, Nopa, Slanted Door along with many of the top 5 thread) and diversity on the low end (Taquerias and Asian).
