How does it taste? Miss Helen's secret: Heat the vegetable shortening and "Throw in thickly sliced onion rings when grease is hot -- that's our SECRET!" Toss the onions in the hot oil and fry until dark brown - they flavor the oil. Then add the chicken. The late Helen Dickerson had some marvious recipes in her cookbook, "I Just Quit Stirrin' When The Tastin's Good"

    Hope someone can help. I want to make the recipe over the weekend and have some input into what her chicken tastes like. Many thanks.

      I made and it is wonderful. I used thighs and chicken breasts. Wonderful flavor with the onion flavored cooking oil. This is a keeper. Try it.
