My taller half and I have been to both the French Lick Resort & Casino and West Baden Springs Resort in the past 6 months. Both beautifully and painstakingly restored and casino, spa & shopping all contribute to an enjoyable stay (ok, not the smoking in the casino but whatya gonna do?) I must confess, though, the food at both is uninspiring. Sinclair's at West Baden is the best of the bunch but still lacking.
A few years ago (pre-renovations) our family was visiting the French Lick/Patoka Lake area for the weekend and we discovered the Blue River Cafe in Milltown, Indiana. It's about 25 minutes east of French Lick and is quite impressive. As I recall, the menu includes vegetables and herbs from organic garden right outside so everything was exceptionally fresh. The fried green tomatoes were amazing! Saturday dinner was so wonderful we returned for Sunday brunch and it was equally outstanding. If owners/chef still there, I cannot recommend more highly -- a real gem in southern Indiana. http://www.bluerivercafe.com/
