Review: Sushi Central - A nice little surprise!

  • 2

A few months ago, I noticed that the mediocre steam table Chinese takeout in the strip mall on the corner of Overland Avenue and Palms had closed and a sushi place had opened in the space.

Now this isn't a glam location so I wasn't expecting much but I had a spicy tuna jones the other day and the place is close to where I live so I finally stopped in.

Wow! What a nice surprise!

Sushi Central is a tiny restaurant: there are maybe six small tables and a few stools at the counter. Its decor is simple but pleasant and the place is very clean. I can't comment on the wait staff because I was doing take-out but I can tell you the food presentation is beautiful, the sushi we've tried so far is damn good and the fish is fabulously fresh.

Turns out the owner, Phillip Yi, used to teach at the California Sushi Academy. The guy's very friendly and boy does he have skills.

The Spicy Tuna bites appetizer I ordered was presented on won ton chips and had a nice amount of heat. My very picky Japanese husband pronounced his Unagi sushi "Good" (the guy seldom rates anything better than "okay") and the Tuna with Yama Imo (grated Japanese sweet potato) was also good.

Since it was my first trip, I figured the Sushi Central Combo would be a safe choice and it was excellent. It includes a bowl of excellent miso, a small salad, five pieces of Ngiri sushi and your choice of four different rolls (I went with spicy tuna, I was REALLY craving it that night). Yummy!

If you're in the area, give it a try. We'll be eating there again very soon.

  1. Was it very expensive or on the low end?

I'd put the prices at low to mid-range. Appetizers ran from $4 to $6. The most expensive rolls are $12. The combos run from $14. to $22. The Nigiri sushi starts at $4. I haven't tried the omakase yet so I've no idea what that runs.
