Ottawa: Dinner suggestions over Canada Day weekend?

Hi!

We are taking our first trip to Ottawa and will be there over the Canada Day weekend. I'm looking for dinner restaurant recommendations - one for with kids and one without kids. We will be at the Minto Suites, so within walking distance of the Byward Market area.

For the "date night" restaurant, we're not necessarily looking for white-tablecloth fancy, maybe somewhere with great food and a cool atmosphere, or somewhere that is quintessentially Ottawa and shouldn't be missed.

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Suzette

  1. don't overlook elgin street for dining too (closer than byward market).

do a search of the boards and you will find lots of recommendations for elgin and byward market. below recommendations are from ottawa regular posters

    Beckta

    byward market:
Black Cat Cafe market cuisine for lunch or dinner
Domus Cafe regional market cuisine - brunch, lunch or dinner
Benny's bistro for great bread, Illy coffee and brunch
    Khao Thai
La Bottegga (for sandwiches or quick bite & Illy coffee)
    Cafe M for Lavazza coffee
    Palais Imperial for dim sum
    Wasabi for sushi
Chez Lucien in the Byward Market at Dalhousie and Murray. Food's okay--wouldn't go for dinner-- but it's a great place to enjoy a beer after a long walk
    Mezzanotte Bistro. http://www.mezzanotte-bistro.com/

    elgin st:
    FrescoCielo
    manx pub

    bank st:
    Whalesbone

with kids - you didn't give ages, so these are general:
    Zak's Diner (Byward Market
    )The Works (Glebe)
    Colonnade Pizza (elgin/Metcalfe St).
