Many Santa Monica Restaurants are CLOSED tonight

Edison is turning off the electricity from 9PM - 9AM on June 19, the grid includes Abode, Tengu, Ivy, and many restaurants along Ocean Ave. If you are planning on going out tonight to any restaurant within that neighborhood, call ahead to make sure it's open!

  1. I just lost my reservation at Abode! Boooo. They were nice enough to call ahead and let me know well in advance. I guess it's Zo for me tonight.

Wow. I can't believe they do that in this day and age. It's like living in France again -- except that when EDF (the national power company) cut the power, the restaurants don't close.

Did they give you priority for reservations at a later date, hrhboo?

Yes, they did but it's not that hard to get a res at Abode anyway. I have dined by candlelight many times during power outages and find it quite enjoyable. I don't suppose the kitchen staff share these sentiments. I can only imagine how stressful it must be to get through a dinner service without light or sufficient air conditioning!

    2. Why is the power being turned off? It must be for a major repair or maintanance. Was it a rolling black out?

more like a brown out. With the weather heating up, they do it to protect the grid from a full blown power blowout.

And it will. Hosted 40 last July at the Ivy when the grid blew out one hour before the dinner started. Almost gave a new meaning to 'surprise' in surprise party. Panic ensued but with the exception of a few dishes not being available, the night was salvaged.

      2. Ate at Library Alehouse last night. I thought that with all the restaurant closures that there would be a lot of spillover clientele, but it was really par for the course crowd-wise.
