Oyster update, Pt. Reyes area

  • 0

Being reasonably internet literate, I did my share of research surfing before setting off for a weekend of oyster-hunting. I forgot one minor thing...the internet does not self-update. Having said that...we had a great trip regardless!

Drakes Bay Oyster Farm ~ We were told it would be rustic, and it was. The oysters here were much, much larger than others we selected during our trip, and were right tasty as well. A little more dirt on the outsides to scrub off, but still...that ocean essence was truly great. 2 doz. of these babies left with us.

Tomales Bay Oyster Farm ~ Lovely plump and meaty oysters with a creamy taste...ah! We weren't sure about how it worked...parking was limited (it was full of picnickers), but service was quick and efficient. We picked up 3 doz. medium oysters here. Cash & carry here...

Hog Island Oyster Farm ~ I was looking forward to the restaurant...it's boarded up. Love to hear the story...? The picnic area was already booked (reservations required), but that was no problem as we weren't planning to stay there and eat, or BBQ as the case may be. I think we will someday, but not this trip. We picked up 2 doz. kumamoto oysters and hit the road. Next day, we came back and picked up a bag of 50 kumamotos and a doz. each of the small and medium sweetwater oysters. I am now totally addicted to kumamotos. How am I going to survive living in-land far from those succulent little gems?

If I missed a farm, someone please tell me!

Other stops included the Cowgirl Creamery (picked up a picnic bag to go-excellent!) and Bovine Bakery (got 2 sourdough loaves to go - equally excellent!); The Tides in Bodega Bay (enjoyed shopping, didn't eat there); Spud Point Crab was PACKED...or we'd have stopped there; The Station House in Pt. Reyes Station - had decent fish and chips, loved the Boontville Amber Ale; got reservations for the Olema Inn, but passed up due to the feast we'd collected. We enjoyed everything the entire weekend! Thanks so much for the hospitality folks!
