  1. How are Puerto Rican pastelles different from Cuban ones? Fillings, technique?

Completely different!!! What cubans usually call pasteles or pastelitos are small pastries. They can be filled with guava, guava and cheese, cheese or even meat but the pastry is still sweet. In Puerto RIco, what we call pasteles is a savory dish (usually served during Christmas but also year round if you know where to go) that resembles a tamal. It is made from mashed root vegetables, yuca (cassava) and plantains in particular, and stuffed with different meats, herbs and sometimes veggies and even raisins. They are soft and wrapped in plantain leaves, then boiled "to perfection". This dish is complicated to make (only my grandma makes them in my family ;-)) and strong in flavor, but if you know food, you will love it! Look up "Puerto Rico pasteles" on google...

As far as the question on the post, I would love to find such a place myself. Haven't yet. My favorite Puerto RIcan restaurant in Miami closed after a fire about a year ago (Carmen's)... If you find it, please let me know...

Yukadeli, NW 36th sTreet in Miami. They serve Dominican Pasteles, they sell them frozen also. We bought some they are pretty good, missing olives and raisins which we put in ours at home.

      3. El Sabor de Cayey
        5985 W. 25 Ct. (24 Pl)
        Hialeah Gardens, FL
        305-821-0886

They're supposed to be known for their Puerto Rican pastelitos. They're closed on Mondays.
