<content>I was at a party this weekend and someone mentioned grilling Twinkies as a special treat. I had never thought it that before and plain ole Twinkies have never been a favorite of mine, but when I thought about caramelizing the outside of them on the grill and the creamy center getting molten, my mouth started watering.

Anybody tried it?

How does it work? Do you have to worry about the center dripping through the grill?</content>

<content>"gourmet" not so much...hah. You find them at state fairs, carnivals, etc. Also deep-fried snickers are popular.

It's kind of a like a charred marshmallow, crispy outside, gooey melty inside.

I usually just limit myself to freshly dipped corndogs and funnel cakes.

I have never heard of a grilled twinkie but next time I find myself with one maybe I'll try it...it does seem totally wrong though.</content>

<content>I'm in Chicago and there's a hot dog joint in our 'hood that says it deep fries Twinkies. It's the grilled concept that struck me as worth trying. Grilling being so much healthier than deep frying, after all. :)</content>

<content>I have grilled pound cake and it works out fine. I image the same basic steps could be adapted to work with a Twinkie, but the quality of a Twinkie makes me wonder if it worth the effort.

I've griled pound cake to serve simply as well as part of more assembled dessert.
For the "by itself" style I cut slices about 1/2 thick spread with a shmear of plain softened butter and grill for about 2-3 mins over medium heat until it toasts. Some grilled fruit and whipped cream makes for a great cook-out mock shortcake.
I've also cut it thinner, skipped the butter shmear and grilled for slightly less time. That results in something that can be spread with cream cheese, butter cream, or creme fraiche and then assembled into quite a fancy layer cake. The natural richness of the pound cake lends it self to something that grills/toasts quite nicely.

With a Twinkie the shortening is a lot less tasty than butter, and the "creme filling" is highly stablized -- I'm not at all sure it would get gooey. The stuff might even have so much high fructose corn sweetener that if might get a mallowy texture or it might just ooze out and smoke away.

I might play with it later in the week; I am kinda curious how this will come out. </content>
