Starboard Galley - quick report

Science Chick Jun 17, 2007 05:41 PM

We stopped by on the way back from Plum Island. I really like this place...set off from the main hullabaloo of Newburyport. We sat on the deck and enjoyed the view. Split a salad (our usual straightforward Caesar..) and a fish and chips. The fish was superb...light crisp coating fried in impeccably clean oil. Not AT ALL greasy. Subbed a baked potato for the fries, and it was a nice fluffy one. I like that you can choose your starch here, in case you are looking for a break from fries. I loved the hint of horseradish in the cole slaw, and we added on some steamed beets, which were beautifully tender and sweet. We also split a beer (only drawback in NO DRAFTS :((( ) and the tab came to $22 before tip.

Hmmm sounds like Starboard Galley has upgraded. It used to be one of the worst restaurants in Newburyport. A local dive where most of the bar patrons had been thrown out of The Black Cow, Michaels and the Thirsty Whale. I'll have to give it another try.

Don't get me wrong, it ain't L'Espalier...but a good stopover for seafood. Additional note: the clam plates and other food coming out of the kitchen looked great. Service was pretty decent, although the host was somewhat dour and seemed put out.

I'm glad you said it - I was going to. Guess we'll have to give it another try, too, after about 5 years of staying away.

Glad you liked the Starboard Galley and I enjoy the food and feel to the place, especially after a day at the beach or on the water. In the past, the place had issues with inconsistant food and rowdy patrons, but those days seem to be long gone.
They prepare seafood well, and the prices are great.
It's great to have options, and the Starboard Galley is certainly a place to consider now as a casual place for seafood in Newburyport, as well as some of the many other places that are frequently mentioned.
