Brunch at The Dakota

After seeing a few positive write-ups, a friend and I checked out brunch at The Dakota today. It's a bit different from the standard Toronto brunch, with a bit of a "brunch at mom's place" feel. The menu is set, so it's not the place to go if you're looking for a lot of choices, but it is all you can eat so picky eaters can have extras of what they like and ignore the rest. They did accommodate a special request, too. The main dish today was an asparagus and mushroom frittata. When I mentioned that I don't eat mushrooms, the server said she'd check on whether they could do up some plain scrambled eggs for me, and they did. My eggs came with a bit of the same cheese sauce that's on the frittata, a small but nice touch.

The meal started with a communal fruit salad (watermelon, grapes, pineapple, canteloupe) and a pumpkin muffin for each of us. The muffins were nicely spiced and quite moist.

The main platter included the egg dishes, lots of peameal bacon, tomato slices, and a potato/sweet potato casserole that was quite tasty. I'm a sweet potato nut, so that probably helped. The peameal was a tad dry but I've had worse, and it was very flavourful.

Coffee, orange juice rounded out the $12/person meal. They have beer, caesars and mimosas available too, for those who are so inclined.

The service was very friendly and quick, with both our main server and another coming by several times to refill drinks and offer additional helpings.

They had a live band playing bluegrass/country music and lots of families with small children got up to dance.

All in all, it's not haute cuisine but it's the kind of tasty meal you'd get at mom's place on the weekend and live music is always a nice touch.
