Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in California (exc. LA, SF Bay Area, San Diego)

Azteca Market and Taqueria, Salinas

Way back in December, “ciaogina” stopped in Salinas on the home stretch of her Christmas break taco crawl and met me at Azteca for the first of four taco stops in my hometown. The market and carniceria has a small sit-down taqueria next door.

When the counter lady asked if we wanted “small” or “large” tacos, I asked whether “large” ones had a handmade tortilla. Yes, indeed, that’s what it means here and many places in this town. We opted for “large” (~$1.85). She was on an al pastor quest, whereas I tried the cabeza.

The cabeza was okay, not bad but not distinctive in any way. And the promised handmade tortillas were strangely tough. These were doubled rather than a single thicker piece. Ciaogina said the al pastor was decent. What did stand out here were the salsas, arrayed on a side table to serve yourself. My plate in the photo has the four that I sampled, and the salsa verde was especially good. I would try this place again because I liked the salsas so much, but choose another meat and the regular tortillas. Ideas for what’s good here?

Driving by Azteca recently, I noticed a small pick-up with a sign promoting “Taqueros al Domicilio.” I checked with the owner about this, and he explained that’s catering for parties at your own home. For $250, he’ll set up a grill and comal on location and serve up to 50 people. For events in other towns, the minimum order is a little higher.
