Haven't been in ages but it used to be pretty good: L'Actuel on Peel between René-Lévesque and Ste-Catherine. www.actuelrestaurant.com

I used to eat at L'Actuel in the 80's but a nostalgic visit in the 90's was less than spectacular.

Le Petit Moulinsart in Old Montreal is Belgian. People like it. I find everything there too salty.

Frite Alors is a Belgian inspired local chain. The have some Belgian dishes like Carbonnades and horse Tartare.

If you're nostalgic for Holland. There's an Indonesian restaurant on Bernard called Nonya. It's very good. The Ristafffels are great.

Looking at the online menu for Frites Alors, it would seem thay have taken off the Carbonnades. They do have some daily specials and some of those are Belgian. You caould always call ahead.

I also forgot about Bistro des Bières Belges. It was featured in the Chow Tour. I've been meaning to go to this place, but I had forgetten about it. It's not downtown, though. It's in St-Hubert, on the South Shore.

is the horse tartare good at frite alors? i'm always tempted to try it but i feel a bit nervous ordering tartare from a place that seems like a fast food place

It's not great, but it's good. I'd say that it's worth it for the price. My GF likes it a lot. They don't always have it, though. We've been there a few times when they were out of horse.
