Rosa Mexicana - Still Good?

I haven't eaten at a Rosa Mexicana in about a year, I favored the one at Lincoln Center. Recently I heard some negative reports about their food and service at that location; "hurried, small portions, bland food."

Any input on that as I wanted to go there for father's day.

  1. Rosa Mexicana gets a lot of knocks on this board. I really like the guacamole, don't find the portions small. The food is not spicy, but I always enjoy it, as well as the margaritas. Not cheap though (not that you were asking about that).

Thanks. No, I know it's not inexpensive, but I was concerned not worth it anymore. Have you been to the LC one recently? That was the one a few of my friends went to (at my suggestion, alas) and they HATED it. They knew it was expensive so it wasn't sticker shock.

You might want to read this thread which was started yesterday by someone who ate at the LC location. (You'll note my post wherein I explain why I'm not a RM fan.)

Thanks, good reading. I think I'll enjoy it after reading the positive reviews.

I've only been to the LC location. Unlike RGR, I've never had awful food there. We often go with friends visiting from London who are craving Mexican food - so they are always happy! I guess a lot of it is where you are coming from - I'm no expert on Mexican food - I've always found the food to be tasty though not outstanding, eye opening etc. - enjoyable, decent portions, pretty good service, great drinks. Look forward to getting your reactions if you go.

      2. I had dinner there last night. They've made a few changes to the menu but the food is still some of the best Mexican in NYC.

I had a great meal at Rosa Mexicana. The best short ribs I have ever had. Everyone at the table had a great meal. I am planning on going back on my visit next week. Loved it.

        2. It's not bad; it's just uninspired for the prices you're paying. Food preparation has become very assembly line and meat/fish are oftentimes overcooked. Unlike many people on the board, I don't think it's horrible, but there really are many better Mexican places in a similar style, in the city. Still, your dad might really enjoy it. It just depends on his tastebuds.

If you throw out some criteria for your Father's Day resto, maybe some of us could give you some alternatives.

I agree that "uninspired" is a good word to describe the food - it's not going to wow you.

          2. I went there recently and wasn't thrilled with my entree (something involving a thick white fish with a sauce that involved tomatoes) but I would definitely go back just for some guacamole and a margarita. That was delicious.

            1. skip it and go to maya instead...65 and 1st

Or Maya's sister restaurant, Pampano, on 49th St., b/t 2nd & 3rd. Excellent modern Mexican cuisine with an emphasis on fish and seafood. And there's a very nice outdoor terrace on the second floor for warm weather dining.
