Speed's Strike Three!

  • b

Why oh why does Speed continue to elude me? I made my first attempt the Friday before Memorial Day, the second attempt yesterday and my third today, and have yet to find him! I'm driving South on Mass Ave, turning left into Newmarket Square by Grainger, driving in a complete circle (er, triangle) around the "square," and then bailing out without any sight of him. Is he there yet somehow invisible to me?

  1. I don't think he goes out on Mondays and Tuesdays...

    1. I went friday, ended up eating wingdings from the other trailer

      1. The secret is... call Grainger's, be really, really nice.

And ask them if the hotdog guy is out there before you head over.

        1. Interesting. The Speed's "apprentices" claimed that they are keeping regular hours M-F 10-5 from now on. Apparently not. I also missed them on the Friday before Memorial Day. Not sure why they would not be there now. Sorry you keep missing them...

          1. Well, I will say, a Speed dog holds much higher interest to me than baseball does, so I'll give it a few more strikes before I call myself out.

Fallback lunch: Ba Le Bakery bahn mi and a couple of summer rolls for a whopping $4.50. Too much food, but it's so good I'll eat it.

Wow. I do admire your persistence. You carry the name Chowhound proudly!

:) Thanks. It's a relatively short drive from the office, and one of these days it's gonna pay off.

Mmmmm, banh mi...Next time you miss him, hit the roti place at the corne of Mass Ave and Columbia Road, forget the name...

Boy, I wish I'd seen your tip on the Roti place. i ran to Newmarket Sq. today expecting to get a Speed's dog. Several miles but i figured it would serve as penance and a caloric balance for the treat ahead. It's Thursday and not raining but alas, no sight nor smell of the fabled weiner wagon. I went instead to Victoria's diner, which i found very disappointing. Roast beef with veg and potato was requested medium rare, and came out as several overcooked slices of warmed up cold cuts with undercooked peas and admitted OK fries with gravy. It brought shame to the name "diner".

                        Singh's Roti; that's it...There's always next time....

Any recent reports on the Venetian Garden?
I think it's Dominican now. Decent?

A friend and I shared a paella ($25) there and we were impressed. HUGE dish, chock full of seafood, including a half lobster and a half crab.

Thanks. I've been meaning to get in there.

                          2. re: galleygirl

My one and only experience with Roti was at Singh's and I still remember how friendly they were there...I think gave me a few samples of things to try and threw in a few free things with what I ended up ordering (which completely eludes me now, though I remember it was good.)

Re Speeds: You have to go when the temp is at least 65 or higher, it's sunny, and it's after Memorial Day. If all three of these conditions are present, your chances of catching him there are infinitely increased!
The last few days it's been cold and almost raw, I'm not surprised he hasn't been there :(

Restaurant Laura is actually worth a stop for Cape Verdean if you happen to be in the neighbourhood.

BK, there are a lot of if's in my reply....sorry. If you can email chowhound in the morning on the day you want to go, I will go over between 10:30 and 11:00 to see if his truck is at home. If not, he's on his way or already at Newmarket. I don't live far from him and I will just drive by to see. If I can check for you, I will reply that I will check and then get back to you after I go. I want you to be able to experience a Speed Dog!

Wow, that truly is going above and beyond! I'll definitely do that edgewater. Thanks!

No Sppeds again today. Someone needs to set up a web cam down there.

I'll chip in the cost of a Speed dog.
