What are the kitchen supply stores in LA and OC?

nolitasurfer Jun 12, 2007 09:00 AM

Besides Surfas, Sur La Table, William Sonoma, what are the options?

I like Star Restaurant supply in Van Nuys. My Van Nuys trek typically involves swinging by 99 Ranch, Star, and then pho at Pho So 1.

For professional stuff at decent prices try Charlie's Fixtures - Venice Blvd. near Western.

Tell Charlie you saw him on Top Chef, he loves the attention.

Charlie is one of the strangest and funny catsI have ever met. As a chef I have found only him to have the best prices in Los Angeles...guranteed. Beware of Charlie...he is very unique. ; )

Thanks! I just moved from NYC to OC last year and discovered Surfas this past weekend. It looks like Star is a big fave with everyone and so is Charlie's. Is it only LA that has these stores? Are ther any in the OC?

Check out Chef's Toys, in Santa Ana:

Definitely not at the level of Surfas ( I love that place!), but it's local for me. They don't have the food products, it's mainly professional equipment, but they do a great job with knife-sharpening at a very reasonable price and they do it while you wait. Also they have a decent selection of the Art Culinaire books !

Keep in mind that Star does not sell food items. They sell stuff for a restaurant to use in cooking, from serviettes and salt shakers and linens right up to hobart mixers and walk ins. Used and new.

You can get a pizza piel, but not the imported corn meal to make it with.

Nothing edible is to be found there.

But GREAT prices on cookware, chefware, baking supplies and appliances.

2000 Plus has been around almost two years now. They're Vietnamese owned and have some more Asian restaurant equipment than the bigger Chef's Toys (which I also recommend). They've got a pretty good range of the Masahiro, Shun and Messermeister knives here. No foodstuffs, just equipment. It's across Talbert from the Fountain Valley Costco.

              2000 Plus
              11210 Talbert Ave
              Fountain Valley

There's also several more restaurant supply places in Little Saigon that I don't remember the names of. There's one in Santa Ana on Harbor called T&H Restaurant Supply. I drive past it, but have never stopped in.

Action Sales in Monterey Park on Atlantic. It's more of a restaurant supply store with lots of knives, utensils, woks, bowls, etc. No food though.

Please provide specifics of what you may be looking for...food items, small ware, equipment, commercial, home use...etc.

Here are a few to add to the list:

                  COMMERCIAL SUPPLIERS:

                  Ace Fixture Company
                  1120 W Lincoln Ave
                  Anaheim, CA 92805

Superior Products - Super Store (Next Day Gourmet)
                  330 E Ball Rd
                  Anaheim, CA 92805

Golden West Equipment (Open To The Trade ONLY)
                  1000 S Euclid St
                  La Habra, CA 90631

Also, though nobody has mentioned it, Smart and Final has many of the basic items for both home and commerical use, and they are all over Southern California and open to the public.

Action Supply was another good suggestion, easier than dealing with parking Downtown LA etc. It's in East LA between Fwy 60 and 10, just East of 710.

This place I've known about for 12 years or so is somewhat eclectic and has quite a selection of baker's supplies for cake decorating and such, as well as a decent supply of cookware and some food items:

                  Cookin' Stuff
                  Southwood Shopping Center
                  22217 Palos Verdes Blvd.
                  Torrance, CA 90505

If I think of any others, I'll post them. Feel free to elaborate on your needs NOLITA

                    Thanks everyone!
I like to do my share of international cooking. I can go to all these differenet places for equipment but what about spices and food-related items that are international (italian, french, middle eastern, asian)? I know that between WholeFoods, Wholesome Choice (in Irivine), Cost Plus, Trader Joes, Gelsons, Bristol Farms and 99 Ranch you can get different selections but there doesnt seem to be one place to get everything. Is that correct?

                      Surfas is good.

The most fun adn best bet is to find a market that caters to the enthnic group whose food you are cooking. Indian spices from an indian market, Korean markets, italian markets, french markets or stores (Little next Door, Monsuer Marcel), Persian, Armenian, markets, Glatt Kosher Markets. halal Markets

We have tons around! All so fun to visit and explore. Plus, you can get great tips on how to cook with it from nice employees or patrons.

Smart and Final also has a smaller division called Cash and Carry (I think) and they cater more to businesses. There is one in Torrance and Long Beach. I know there are more, but not sure where.

                      Please check out restaurantdepot.com

I drove by a Restuarant Depot in Pasadena recently but I didn't have time to take a look.

As for new cooking and kitchen equipment, there is a huge place on Washington Blvd. just west of Western on the north side of the street that sells pots, pans, graters, gadgets, cutting boards, measuring cups, mixing spoons, bar stools, tables...and everything else for restaurants. This shop is also asian owned and sells all of there products at incredible prices. Along this stretch of Washington--between Western and Crenshaw--there are a number of other restaurant supply stores that are all open to the public.

Charlie's is on VENICE BLVD., not Washington. Used to be on Washington but they moved a couple of years ago.

                            2251 Venice Blvd.

Almost totally commercial equipment, but you may find the following useful:

                          1215 West Katella Avenue
