BEST Mexican Food in Seattle?

BEST Mexican Food in Seattle??

Mexico's a big country. La Carta de Oaxaca serves rather different food than, say, El Quetzal.

...but I have to go with La Carta. Damn, that place is really incredible.

(Props to El Puerco Lloron, though, for by far the best Mexican food downtown. Wish it were open later.)

Second Oxaca but most underated in Chile Pepper in Wallingford (if you order the right things).

I have always been curious by this place Chile Pepper, while also remaining skeptical. Something about the sign screams dissapointment, maybe the generic name. But what are the "right things"?

As is often the case, I agree with terrier: from top to bottom there probably isn't a better mexican menu that La Carta's. For special items, I like La Conasupo's barbacoa, tacos served up at Muy Macho (south park taqueria) and Rancho Bravo (wallingford truck), and huaraches from El Quetzal.

Incidentally, is Senor Moose for real?

Senor Moose is real enough for this Texas boy. Flavors - oh yes, Ingenious dishes - yes. Reasonable prices - yes. I like it quite a bit (and it is in my neighborhood). They tolerate the "small-plates" approach, which we do every couple of months.

I wrote that post, stood up, and my wife said "I'd like to go out, where shall we go?" I said, of course, how about Senor Moose? That suggestion was well received and now we are happy full. Yes, yes, yes. App of a pile of sticks of chile-dusted Jicama and cucumber, with lime juice. Salad of watercress, tiny dice of cheese, well-matched citrus dressing. Tacos Dorados de papa - wow, nice rolled potato tacos, deep fried crispy, with flavors popping all around. The camarones Veracruzana were an ingeniosity, to be sure. Sort of a Shrimp Putanesca. Green olives, capers, some chopped tomato, onions. Nicely done. Well delivered shrimp. Not a ball of fire, but nice enough. Overall presentation got a little soggy in the end, but quite good. Total food $35 plus 2 glasses very nice house-made sangria, $15 more. Total 51=60. We love this place.

I'd also like to know what are the "right things" to order at Chile Pepper. The food was laughably bad the last time I went. And I so wanted it to be good because it's walking distance from my house.

I loved my breakfast at Senor Moose!
