La Cocina Mexicana, Newark report w/ pics

hhc Jun 10, 2007 11:14 PM

came here for dinner Sun 6/10/07. It used to be a Chinese restaurant.

There is a Grand Opening sign outside.

They have tacos, burritos, nachos, quesadillas, mariscos, coctel de camaron, especials, combinaciones, tostades, tortas, aguas frescas. On Sat & Sat. they have Menudo-Red or white; and Pozole.

I got 3 tacos which comes w/ choice of meat, cilantro, onions, cabbage & salsa for $1.25 each. The meats I picked were Adobada-marinated pork; Lengua-beef tongue; chile verde-pork in green sauce. All were good. Free fresh salsa bar available.

Also got a small cantaloupe aguas fresca $1.50. Tasty and refreshing served over ice.

Credit cards taken. My total was $5.93. Unisex bathroom available.

Things I might try next time:
hot dogs con tocino: hot dogs wrapped in bacon $1.95
Menudo white $5.95 small
tortas cubana $5.75

Thanks for the review. Do you know if they have al pastor?

Haven't been there, but you might try the adobada. Places usually offer one or the other. Adobada has a similar marinade but isn't roasted on a spit . . . and many places that say they have al pastor are actually making it just like adobada.

how does it compare to Los gallos, also in newark (if you've been)?

      thanks

no al pastor. These are the meats they have:
asada, adobada, pollo adobado, lengua, carnaza, and chile verde.

I haven't been to Los Gallos in a long time and only once to La Cocina so hard to say. Both are good, why don't you give it a try.
