Purchasing a Wok in Chinatown today

Any good stores you would recommend? I am looking for a carbon steel wok that i can season. I also need to stock up on some ingredients like soy, hoisin, oyster, sesame oil, etc.. So I could use a good rec for that as well.

I just moved and need to restock my kitchen.

thanks

Too late for you, but the basement of Pearl River, in the new location on Broadway, has inexpensive woks, and the main floor has a small grocery selection with the stuff on your list. The dry goods selection is small, you can do better by walking East on Grand St, and stopping at several other Chinese markets, but for one stop shopping, it's not a bad place.

The Wok Shop in San Francisco's Chinatown is a good source for a wide variety of woks, as woks is their main focus. I mention this as they do Internet orders through their Yahoo! store, though the best selection can be had through telephone orders. (http://www.wokshop.com/

      )

Just the subcategories off of their wok page lists the following categories::

      built in
      carbon steel set
      carbon steel: w/helper handle
      carbon steel w/steel handles
      carbon steel w/wood handles
      iron/enamel
      cast iron from china
      cast iron set
      flat bottom stainless
      iron 'pow'
      hand hammered
      mini stainless steel
      non-stick
      pre-seasoned
      stainless from china
      stainless round bottom

I bought a stone grain mill from them, something that is almost impossible to find otherwise, and have bought woks from them as well. And like many a Chinatown merchant, their prices are unbelievably low.

As for Manhattan I seem to recall a well-stocked 2 story cookware/kitchenware/dried goods store in Chinatown, near the Aji Ichiban store at Mott and Pell.

I bought my carbon steel wok from the basement of Kam man at 200 Canal St. It cost something like 6 dollars and I've been quite happy with it (also got a lid for it, which was surprisingly more, maybe 10 something). It's a grocery store as well, so you can pick up the ingredients you're looking for as well.

Thanks, forgot about Kam man. I buy my roast duck there.

There's a supermarket near the Manhattan Bridge where I shop (Hong Kong Supermarket?). There's a small market (Thai, etc.) on Mosco Street (betw Mulberry and Mott). Go to the Bowery for your wok.

Or go the the kitchenware store on the west side of Chatham Square (or is that Confucius Square now?) north of Mott. Best place, nicest people. But you'll have to go elsewhere for ingredients.

How are their prices? I usually go to the restaurant supply stores on The Bowery.

I find that store's prices to be expensive. Try further up on Bowery, where you'll also find greater selection.
