Lost Wages and Good Meals-Las Vegas Trip Report Day Three (Bouchon and Lotus of Siam)

Day 3.

After several previous attempts to make it to Bouchon for breakfast, we finally we able to get ourselves out of bed and over to the Venetian in time for breakfast. Since they don’t make reservations for breakfast, we put our name down waited for a few minutes. They have complimentary pastries and coffee while you wait as well as several different newspapers, including the Yountville local paper. I have to say that the grounds surrounding the Venezia tower are very beautiful. You feel very secluded from the noise of the Venetian.

After a few minutes wait, we were taken to our table and given the breakfast menus. We were asked what kind of water we wanted to drink, and I wasn’t paying much attention, so we ended up paying $7 for a bottle of Evian. I am just fine with tap water and appreciate it when servers give me a choice without making me feel like cheapskate by asking for plain tap water. I am going to spend some money here, and I would prefer to spend it on the food rather than a bottle of water. So anyway, I ordered a chocolate milk and hubby an orange juice. My chocolate milk was excellent, deep and rich and very satisfying.

Hubby ended up ordering the croque madame with French fries and I ordered the two eggs with potato croquettes and substituted a side of fruit for the meat that normally comes with the dish. I have to say that my breakfast was good, but nothing spectacular. I was expecting the eggs, which I ordered scrambled, to be something revelatory, but they were just plain ole’ scrambled eggs. They tasted like scrambled eggs I have had in dozens of coffee shops. The potato croquettes were good, they were kind of like mashed potatoes that had been coated and deep fried. The taste wasn’t off or anything, but the texture to me was a little off-putting. I think I like hash browns or home fries better. The fruit was good, it was mostly berries in a light citrus syrup.

The croque madame was on toasted brioche with ham and cheese and fried egg on top. The sandwich also came with mournay sauce as well as the famous pommes frites. Hubby thought the amount of French fries was a little ridiculous as there were so many you could hardly eat the sandwich. The French fries were good, but not spectacular. The sandwich was pretty much a ham and cheese sandwich with an egg on top, which is to say, nothing that special. The mournay sauce was of special note. We ended up paying about $60 with tax/tip and felt that the food did not live up to the bill.

Overall, the restaurant is beautiful and located in very nice gardens. The breakfast, however, did not really live up to our expectations. In comparison, I think that the Verandah breakfast at the Four Seasons is just as beautiful and has more consistent, better tasting food.

On the other hand, we visited Bouchon bakery, located in a different area of the property, and they have some awesome pastries. We bought a chocolate croissant and a cheese danish and ate them later that day. Both of them were stupendous! The chocolate croissant was flaky, buttery goodness. The cheese danish had both cream cheese filling on top and inside, wow! Maybe we should stick to the pastries for breakfast.

For dinner we had a 6:30pm reservation at Lotus of Siam and we decided that we would ask the waiter to bring out whatever they thought was best. Although we had eaten here once before, we were still overwhelmed by the menu and wanted the best experience possible.

We told our server that we wanted an appetizer and two entrees. We said anything was fine except for the catfish (since hubby does not care for it). We also ordered one tasting flight of Riesling to share between the two of us. Our server was very accomodating and very quick throughout the night.

For the appetizer, the waiter brought out the sour sausage with crispy rice. Outstanding! We had enjoyed the appetizer previously, but had forgotten how the texture of the crispy rice along with the minced sausage and the sprig of mint just works so well. We made short work of the plate and were hungry for more.

The entrees were brought out and we were presented with the special of the night, sea bass in drunken noodles and #58 on the menu, BBQ beef with garlic. Both of these dishes were superb, but I have to say that the sea bass was perfect. The fish had been de boned, coated in a super light batter, and then deep fried for what must have been a very quick minute. The result was a perfectly cooked fish that was not greasy or heavy, but light, airy and delicious. The fish was served a top some slightly spicy noodles. The combination was heaven. I probably never would have ordered this dish on my own, but was so glad they had brought it out. The BBQ beef was excellent and only my second choice because the fish was outstanding. I usually do not eat beef, but this beef was cooked perfectly, still pink and moist in the middle, and presented sliced. The dish did have a lot of garlic, but you didn’t really mind because it also had a lot of other flavors going on, citrus, soy, and a little sweetness (but not too much). If all beef tasted like this, I would have to reconsider my stance on eating it. Again, this was a dish that I probably never would have ordered on my own (BBQ beef, it sounds so boring!), but was so glad they had brought it out.

For the Riesling flight we enjoyed three different wines. There was one dry Riesling, a Gunder-lock 2004, a medium Riesling, Selbach-Ster Wehlner 2005, and a sweet one, Heramer Scholssbockelheimer 2005. We found that we both really liked the medium bodied with our food and were surprised by how much the taste of the wine changed depending on which dish we were eating. We look forward to trying other pairings in the future.

In the end, we ended up paying about $70 with tax/tip. The sea bass special was a little pricey (comparatively) at $23, but we were not complaining. We were very pleased with the value of our meal, especially for being in Las Vegas. This is a must-do for us when we return!
