Fresno Produce in Pasadena/Altadena for great produce.

So many a time over the last year I've passed this place on the NE corner of Washington and Valencia (I think), a block west of Altadena Dr., on I guess the Altadena side of the street (not sure about that - maybe it's Pasadena), called Fresno Produce. Judging from the name and the location, I figured it was probably run by Armenians, and I know how picky Armenians can be about good produce. Anyway, I finally went in this week to try it out and I wish I'd done so sooner.

It's a small store and the selection isn't huge, but it's extremely good. And inexpensive. I got a few peaches, a couple of tomatoes, some cherries. The peaches are the sweetest I've had lately and super juicy. At 69 cents a pound I was blown away. The quality was far better than what's been at the Pasadena farmer's market lately, and needless to say nobody can compete with the prices. The vine ripened tomatoes were excellent, and again at 89 cents a pound an unbeatable deal. The cherries tasted like the cherries that used to come off my grandparent's tree in their backyard (delicious). I was so impressed I went right back the next day and got some apricots that were fantastic, more cherries, apples, more tomatoes, a huge bag of radishes, and a bunch of very fresh mint. The funny thing is that when I took the mint, which was the last in the box (but still looked huge and fresh especially considering that it cost well under a buck), the owner comes at me with a bunch of mint twice the size and bursting with freshness. It was like he'd just gone out back to pick it. He forced me to take it instead of the bunch I'd already grabbed. I walked out with two big bags of delicious fresh produce for the shockingly low price of $5.

Today I skipped the farmer's market. And I think the Whole Foods is going to be getting less of my paycheck in the future.
