Radishes shrunk in fridge, now what?

Bought a glorious bunch of fresh-picked radishes at the Farmers Market on Sat morning. By Tues afternoon, they were shrunken in my fridge to abt. the size of grapes. What happened and can I do anything with them besides tossing in the compost?

  1. Compost they are, but I would go back to the FM again and tell them. In the markets I visit the vendors are pretty fleixble, and if you ask nicely you might get a replacement. Strange that they would spoil so quickly.

      I don't know - I wouldn't ask for a replacement. Seriously - these are farmers. They're not making tons of cash and it's just a bunch of radishes. You stored them improperly - definitely should have cut the leaves off and put them in plastic - and it's not their fault. It's a cheap lesson in radish husbandry for you.

        It all depends on how they were stored. All produce must be wrapped properly for storage in the fridge. Left out in the open, they will lose moisture, and also pick up off flavors and odors from the fridge.

        I store produce in a ziplock freezer bag. For herbs, I wash them and wrap in paper toweling, then in the bag.

        Fresh produce stored well should last a week or more.

      2. They are indeed compost. How did you store them in fridge?

        1. Were they stored in a plastic bag? Like carrots, turnips and many other veggies, radishes are mostly water. Sounds like they dehydrated. Also, next time be sure to cut the tops off before putting them in a plastic bag. The tops will turn to slime very quickly if they are left attached. The radishes won't necessarily be bad, but it will be unpleasant to salvage them from the slimy leaves.

          I agree with other posters: into the compost with them.

          1. Yes, they are compost. I find that the same thing happens with carrots if I leave the tops on; the plants don't know that they aren't still in the ground, and the tops keep drawing moisture from the roots (which is the part you want to eat). Ditto with beets. (I cut off the beet greens and put the bouquet in water and put the whole business in a plastic bag in the refrigerator, where they keep a few days until I eat them too.)

            1. If you havn't tossed them yet, you could try reviving them by putting them in a bowl of ice water.
              The minute I get my radishes home, I wash them, trim them, and put them in a bowl of water and put them in the refrigerator. You don't want them to sit like this for too long or they will become almost waterlogged/soggy, but this keeps them crisp for a few days.

                Yeah, if that revives them a bit ... toss with olive oil ... sprinkle with salt and roast in the oven.

                  Ok, I must admit, it was my first time buying radishes and I didn't trim/store them. Popped them in the fridge, as is, and what I got in return is a lesson in radishes. Thanks for the tips. Haven't liked radishes in my 42 years until recently. Will try again, soon.

                    If you are getting started with radishes, try a small Daikon (Large white radish). Lots of flavor and many, many uses.
