Speed's - a first timer's report

The background. For year's I've been trying to get a Speed Dog. And for years, I've been foiled. Rain. Or no Speed. Or more rain. And the time I was three people from the counter when a work emergency killed the dream ...
So you can imagine the delight when work unexpectedly took me south of town for a mid-morning meeting and brought me back up I-93 to the Mass. Ave. exit at 12:15 with no responsibilities until mid-afternoon. Kismet!
The scene: A dozen men (all men), mainly blue collar workers and truck drivers in line. Slight overcast gave way to beautiful sun and pefect San Diego 70-degree weather.
The wait: 15 minutes. One person in line commented this was a new record for Speed's.
The Dog: Everythiung but relish. The dog felt more like a sub, which was a great thing. The toppings were so juicy - thank goodness I was forewarned to lean my chin away from my body while eating. The dog was perfect for a all beef style pup and the toppings went well together - especially the blend of sweet sauce and smoky chili, with the slight tang of the sweet onions. The lone, teensy pick I had was the mustard, which did not add a lot of flavor.
The verdict: What's not to like? I left with my belly full and my taste buds satisfied. Just like Sullivan's & Simcos, Speed's is a must for every person who loves a good hot dog.
