Union Oyster House or Daily Catch

My branch manager was invited to dinner at the Union Oyster House and the Daily Catch on the same night (Monday). He put me in charge of picking the better restaurant. Can you offer opinions? Thanks.

  1. if those are your only choices then The Daily Catch by far. Union Oyster is consistently awful unless your talking oysters, and then only at the first floor oyster bar.

    1. UOH at the stone oyster bar ONLY for their raw bar. DC for dinner for sure.

But I bet they're talking about the Daily Catch by the Waterfront which doesn't get such great marks usually. Maybe it's gotten better. And maybe they're going to the tiny North End place but since it sounds like it might be a business dinner, that's doubtful.

Agreed. If it's the DC on Hanover, go for it. The courthouse location isn't as good.

Although that said, even the courthouse DC is better than UOH.

Just don't order anything specialized at the courthouse DC -- I haven't been back for a couple of years (on purpose), but was never certain there was a lot of turnover in all of their stuff...and don't question their "putanesca" dish unless you want to be yelled at and argued with for thinking it should have capers and a couple of other key ingredients that theirs does not! I'd order their standard squid ink pasta in that location.

Definitely avoid Union unless your boss can get a seat at the oyster bar and make a meal of just oysters. The food is TERRIBLE!!!!!

              Daily Catch - only Hanover.

Never ever eat at UOH. I once ran from the place leaving food and money on the table. The place, the service, and the fare are all very old. Daily Catch is OK. Sometimes overfried, always overpriced. Try B&G in the south end where the oysters and entrees (including perfectly fried calamari) are excellent! Neptune Oysters on Salem is also very good. East Coast Grill (Inman Sq) has a good raw bar and a great vibe with terrific cocktails.

        2. I LOVE the Daily Catch in the North End. Never been to Union Oyster House (always have wanted to try this classic though). But from what I remember the Daily Catch was full of flavor and a fun (albeit cramped) environment.

It's a pretty unique place in terms of how they serve the food and everything is very fresh and well cooked.

          1. I have never once been impressed by the UOH. Their fish always seems to be over cooked and under-seasoned, the clam chowder has far more chunks of flour than of clam and if there's a sauce, the rest of the dish is drowning in the it -- which is always bland!

            1. went to courthouse daily catch last night. food took over 45 minutes to come out. i think we must have ordered right after a huge party, but still, it was just the two of us and just ordered 2 entrees. the clams and pasta fra diavlo served in the skillet was good, the broiled cod with grilled veggies was also good. neither was anything special, but not bad. very loud singer/ guitar player was more annoying than enjoyable. don't think we will ever go back, too many better choices nearby.

              1. Please don't tell me the Daily Catch in the North End isn't good anymore. I was introduced to puttanesca there and have never found anything even comparable when I order it elsewhere. I haven't been in about three years, but it's one of my more memorable meals.

The Hanover locaion is still a big fav of mine.

The courthouse Daily Catch has always seemed to be much more bland in flavor (IMO).

I haven't been to the courthouse location, but I think the North End location of Daily Catch is GREAT!! Friends and I waited two hours to get into the North End Location once and we thought it was well worth the wait. I love the ground squid with squid ink pasta and I also loved my boyfriend's dish, I think it was monk fish marsala (can't quite remember). I hated the Union Oyster house when I went there.
