mitchell's fried chicken

got takeout from mitchell's on vanderbilt ave in prospect heights last night after not having it for a couple of years. just wanted to confirm that the fried chicken is as great as ever. ditto the potato salad.

in comparing it to pie & thighs, where i have been eating fried chicken a lot lately, I like the chicken and potato salad at michell's better. pie & thighs chicken has a thicker crust and is less juicy. mitchell's is thinner and more peppery, and the chicken is juicier. for one thing, the chickens they use appear to be smaller, which i think must help to keep it juicy.

the potato salad at pie & thighs is good, but it's big chunks where the potato is dominant. mitchell's is more of a small diced homogenous whole with bits of egg and a mustardy dressing, which i prefer.

just comparing the two so that people can make up their own minds as to which style they prefer. I don't mind eating from either, but if I had a choice, I'd choose mitchell's. another plus to mitchell's is that they have several green veggies to choose from (collards, green beans, okra), while at P&T if you don't like collards, you're out of luck.

How does Mitchell's compare to Charles? (Which IMO, and despite how much I like Pies N Thighs in general, blows PNT chk out of the water.)

I'd say not as good as Charles', but not far off either. Mitchell's stuff is really a different style though. Less crusty than Charles.

Vanderbilt betw. St. Marks & Bergen.
