Greendale, WI

wench31 Jun 6, 2007 06:52 PM

Hello, My family and I will be visiting Chicago in a few weeks and driving over to Greendale, WI to tour Taste of Home Kitchens. Has anybody been there and can tell me about it?
Is it worth the drive? Also, any restaurant recommendations for Greendale?

Thanks!

Kopps Custard is right there in Greenfield on 76th street. You could get burgers and custard. If you go to their website you can even see the flavors in advance

Kopps is definitely the best custard I have ever had in my life, so don't pass it up. The burgers are good too, don't get me wrong, but I would recommend eating somewhere in the Greendale Village like Hinneman's -- their whole menu consists of Taste of Home recipes. They are located at 5601 Broad Street and can be reached at 414-423-6200. If you're a Taste of Home fan you cannot pass this one up!

If you're a fan of Taste of Home, you may want to eat at their restaurant. Their menu items are from recipes featured in their magazines. You should definitely have a reservation as it's a busy place. Be sure to look around Greendale - it's a beautiful town.

Taste of Home Restaurant has been taken over by Heinemann's. Heinemann's has a few (maybe 3) recipes from the magazine but the rest of the menu is strictly Heinemann's , which isn't a bad thing. http://www.foodspot.com/heinemanns/gr...
Depending when you are going reservations aren't necessary BUT Taste of Home is having a huge tent sale this weekend so the crowds will be big. There is also a pizza place in the village which is pretty good, Ricardo's.

Thank you for all the recommendations so far. I also know that Wisconsin is the home of cheese. Does anybody know of any good cheese places within driving distance from Chicago? I don't want to end up driving a few hours for it because I am already driving from NJ. :)

Mars Cheese Castle is quick and easy access off of I-94, http://www.marscheese.com/. I think there is another cheese shop right next to mars too. I have received a fantastic cheese bread from Mars. I think you'll find a good selection and plus it is right off the interstate.

Their bakery breads are great. Pick up a few Kringles (a round flat fruit or nut filled pastry) while you're there too.

Well if you're going to Mars Cheese Castle you may as well consider a trip to The Brat Stop for Wisconsin brats. http://www.bratstop.com/
            Have fun!

And what about frozen custard? You gotta try that Kopps is very close to Taste of Home (less than 5 mins away) and it's my absolute favorite! That will complete your Wisconsin experience!
