White Castle Hamburgers in Tampa (Channelside)!

Love 'em or hate 'em, they are reported to be here "through a special arrangement with White Castle HQ" -- and claiming to be the only ones this side of Tennessee! They will be at a new place called Pirate's Cove in Channelside....should be interesting! Only down side, lack of parking/expensive parking in that area.

As was seen in Creative Loafing May 30th - June 5th, 2007 edition:

Personally, I have always thought Krystals were an anemic imitation of White Castles. Not nearly as good -- again --if you like that kind of thing. And I do.. once in a while!

There's a touch of veal in the White Castle burger -- in fact, I believe the knock off recipes used veal baby food in the beef mix . . .

White Castles also have small holes in the center which steams them and the onions on the grill. No holes in Krystal.

We are transplanted NY'ers, so I read this post and ran down to Tampa. We hit up the Aquarium to work up an appetite. Then went in search of the fabled WhiteCastle insignia.

We found it. one on each of the glass doors to Pirate's Cove. BUT we didn't order or eat. Here's why. We walk up to the place and see 2 pairs of turntables w/ stands right in front of the window, ok they're for entertainment. Ok we keep walking in. place is empty. Looks more like a bar that wasn't ready to open yet. as you walk in through the door there is a counter where they were attempting to sell T-shirts and gum among other "tourist" essentials. Then 2 bull dogs or maybe pugs (I'm not a dog person) come strolling out of the backroom. The bar wasnt stocked, It seriously looked like these people were just moving in.

Hope this 'bumps' this thread up so a local can tell us the status.

We ended up at the Columbia in St. Pete's. (we've now eaten at 4 of their locations)

That was exactly my experience a few weeks ago. Not the kind of place that I wanted to sit down and order. The NY pizza place a few doors down was friendly and good though.

Try the frozen ones from Albertson's, etc. They're not too bad.

I tried this place out today. It was definitely a weird atmosphere.. A bar at night and convenience store / White Castle in the day. We were the only ones in there, but the burgers were the real thing and that's all that mattered to me! $1 per burger was well worth it!

A buck a burger!!??? Isnt that much for a tiny White Castle burger? I can eat six to ten of those in one sitting. I'll settle for my nearest grocer for the frozen ones, they are YUMMY, and eight will cost you about $3.
