My very picky eater 13-year old niece is visitng from Boston (her neighborhood lacks good Mexican food) - and she LOVES Bean and Cheese Burritos and craves them like crazy. I'm in L.A. and we've been making our way through some great burritos!

We are going up to SB for the day on Thursday and I'd like to take her to a spot that has great bean and cheese burritos (either refried beans or pinto beans). Any suggestions?

I think I may take her to La Super Rica, just for kicks, although, I know she won't eat anything off the menu (maybe a tortilla!) she's not a taco girl - only bean & cheese burritos!

Also - if you have any other food suggestions, I'm all game - I'm also thinking of heading to the crepe place off State St. somewhere - is that place still around?

I say la Super Rica.

But to be truthful, I've never had a burrito there.

La Super Rica on Milpas is the bomb, but I doubt they even have bean burritos! One of the best places for good (small) burritos is The Rose Cafe on the lower eastside of downtown, Haley Street.

I think the crepe place has dissolved - the one across from Playa Azul on Santa Barbara?

re: the crepe place - I wasn't sure where it was, as I've never been and have been wanting to check out when I was in town. Is the place you are thinking Pacific Crepes on Anacapa?

Thanks also for The Rose Cafe info!

Take her across the street from SuperRica a bit to Bajio and ask them to make this for her.
They do not do burritos at La SuperRica. Maybe she would like the Number 15 Tocino Special at LSRica - melted cheese and bacon with fresh tortillas. Total heaven when mixed with the pico de gallo for "adults" - may be too strong a taste for her - but the cheese and bacon and tortillas is pretty darn yummy.

Thank you for the Bajio info!! I have heard of another great spot on Milpas, but I've never been and didn't know the name!! That's gotta be the one.

Thanks for the info on the No 15 - while it's one of my pals most favorite things, my niece would be grossed out by the bacon. She likes things unsauced and very simple ;) maybe they'll just make a quesadilla for her -- at the least, I'm taking her there to have tortillas!

I grew up on plain quesadillas from La Super-Rica (and I believe they're still a regular menu item), so you shouldn't have a problem getting one for your niece.

In addition to "El Bajio", I really enjoy "Los Arroyos" (2 locations: downtown Figueroa betw State & Chapala and Montecito far southern end of Coast Village Road). I'm sure they have bean/cheese burritos.

At Super Rica, your niece might enjoy the plain gordita -- just beans wrapped in corn dough (no cheese though).

And yes, Pacific Crepes is still on Anacapa (1 block parallel to State) between De La Guerra & Cota (across from Paradise Cafe).

I have had rotten luck at Pacific Crepes. I can't understand how they have survived so long on such lousy and not cheap fare. It should be so easy to make good crepes. Gheeesh, little outdoor stands in Paris make terrific ones. Maybe some one can help me out. The place is cute. A French language group meets there regularly. Good location ---- but lousy crepes. What gives?

I've only been there for breakfast a couple times and enjoyed it. I thought I remembered reading that their crepes were actually more in the tradition of the galette de Bretagne -- a buckwheat crepe. The service, however, is trés European: not a smile cracked or a (fake?) greeting chirped, ever. This reminds me that I want to make a return visit, because I do like the food for a change of pace.

The best burrito in town remains Super Cuca's on West Micheltorena in the heart of the downtown Westside Village business district at San Andres and West Micheltorena. There nachos are addicting too, plus they have all the good liquados as well. A horchata and a plate of seasoned pork nachoes and it is as good as it can get at this nice local, homegrown spot.

The Rose Cafe really is a great little old place. And they make small burritos! Yes, I was thinking of Pacific Crepes too. Another downtown option which has gorgeous outdoor ambiance is Playa Azul - on Santa Barbara too, I believe. Again, a standard Mexican restaurant, but the patio is gorgeous, and I assume they make a decent bean and cheese burrito. I haven't been there in years and while it is quite standard fare they used to make a respectable chile relleno. Then there is always Rudy's on upper State - they used to have wonderful beans from what I remember from the mid-to-late 80s when I worked in the neighborhood.

Rudy's on West Montecito and Bath Streets (Upper West Beach area) makes the best chile rellenos - and you can order them ala carte which includes chips for only a few dollars. This is one of those sleeper local specials. Nice fresh salsa bar to dip those chips and add pico de gallo to the rellenos. Good eating - small price -- consistent fresh quality.
