Hi-

I am taking a friend out and they want Italian and possibly good pizza but I am limited to Pompano and Deerfield due to driving distances.

Is there any really fabulous but inexpensive Italian and pizza combos in those areas?

Am NOT into super $25 pp Italian but nice Mom and Pop places that are terrific...

I am coming from Boca and they are coming from Miami....

thanks

For pizza, you could try Umberto's in Pompano Beach on Atlantic Blvd. east of Federal Hwy (US1) and just west of the intercoastal on the south side of the street. We really like their brick oven pizza. Can also recommend their steamed clams and house salad (big enough to share). They have a full italian menu, but can't speak from experience about these other items. This will feel like a "mom and pop".

On the pricier side -- and not for pizza -- is Gianni's. Also on Atlantic Blvd. in Pompano Beach it's west of US 1 (but east of i-95) on the north side of the street (parking in the back). Although they have many, more expensive items, you could do one of their pasta dishes (which includes their house salad of romaine lettuce, crumbles of blue cheese, and balsamic vinagrette dressing as well as their garlic rolls) and still be in around the $20 price range. Their lasagna with meat is quite good...although we usually get their (more expensive) shrimp francesca or picata which comes with a side of spaghetti. Oh, and it's father (Ciro) and son (Gianni)...

Umbertos is the way to go. We dine at the one on Commercial blvd, if its the same, its perfect for your price range. Brick oven pizza at its brooklyn best.
